Fly plaid with....
Hi All,
So this morning I started having a mild panic attack (nothing to do with getting married in 2 months).
I'm planning on getting a Fly plaid but currently am hiring a highland morning jacket and not PC.
Are there any suggestions/rules/general fashion tips as to with which style of jacket a fly should be worn?
Ross

Personally, I wouldn't wear a fly plaid with anything. That's just me, mind you, but I do think that it looks vaguely strange and serves only as an aid to knocking over people's drinks and taking longer to get ready.

Re: Fly plaid with....
I tend to agree with Ross, but the choice is yours
I assume you mean an Argyll jacket when you say a "morning" jacket. If it is made of black barathea then I have seen a fly plaid worn with that
Traditionally a plaid is considered very formal and is usually only worn with a PC or doublet at an evening (white tie) function. Here in Scotland it is also sometimes worn by the groom along with a PC and at the last wedding I attended here in Scotland all the groom's men wore a fly plaid as well. But again they were also wearing Prince Charlie coatees
I don't think you will be making a fashion faux pas because these days pretty much anything goes as long as you feel comfortable wearing it. Personally I would change the style of jacket worn to a PC though or ditch the fly plaid which, as Ross says, will probably knock a few drinks over

Re: Fly plaid with....
I've never worn one but by all accounts they are uncomfortable and generally a bit of a pain which has convinced me to steer clear.
Enjoy your big day whatever you decide.

As the resident fan of the fly plaid, I have to side with the advice given. I wouldn't recommend a PC for a daytime wedding, and to me, the fly plaid with a less formal jacket just doesn't look right. The main thing to remember, though, is to post pictures of the cake.

The general tenor of advice you will get, no matter how long this stays open, is to not wear a fly plaid.
I read the same thing a bunch of times myself before my bride's big day. She wanted me in a fly plaid even knowing I would likely never wear it again lifetime. So I wore a fly plaid for my bride on her wedding day and know she has a wrap in my clan tartan.
No regrets man, no regrets.

I know the reservations and I understand and respect them. Nonetheless, I've got one; I wear it rarely. When I do, it's with my black barathea Argyle because that's my most formal jacket. I make no apologies, and I've had a lot of compliments. I do hook it onto my epaulette with the loop. No problems!

Re: Fly plaid with....
Spend the money on diced or argyll hose instead. At least you'll get some future wear out of those. A plaid is just wrong on an Argyll style jacket and wrong in the day time. the fact that they're not popular around here is immaterial in this instance.

Re: Fly plaid with....
I'm a little shocked to hear this coming from myself, being more of a traditionalist and all. I say if you want to wear a fly plaid at your wedding, then wear it! It's yours (and the misses') day, enjoy it! That being said, you solicited advice from forum members, and true to form, there is never a lack of opinions and ideas (which is what makes this forum so dynamic.) Daytime vs. night time, Argyle jacket vs. PC jacket ... conventions, rules, traditions; these are just guidelines. Mixing it up a little can be part of the adventure. Just remember, if it's stressing you out too much, then keeping it simpler is best. You want to balance comfort with style, and admittedly some formality, as a wedding is often a good excuse to get more gussied up than usual. Especially your own!
At my (afternoon) wedding I wore charcoal Argyle tweed jacket and vest with Highland Granite kilt and charcoal hose (white shirt, black ghillie brogues, etc.) My husband wore dark jeans, light grey tweed blazer, and matching tartan vest and fly plaid. He looked great and none of our guests had anything to say but positive remarks. Granted there were no high ranking X-markers in attendance to "keep us in line." :-)
Congratulations!
