    Formal Belt and Dirk?

I am in a wedding this summer. I have commissioned a knife maker to make me a custom dirk and sgian dugh. The others in the wedding are excited about seeing the dirk and sgian so no issues about the blades. The question is can I wear a belt with a Prince Charles? I rarely wear a belt ever(personal choice) but to have the dirk a belt must be worn. Many threads here agree a belt should never be worn with the Prince Charles or even argyll jackets. Any thoughts?

I hadn't seen that particular complaint about the belt.

The belt should not be worn with a waistcoat (vest) - that much, I agree with.

That said, I don't think I'd wear a dirk with a Prince Charles - I think they look much nicer "plain," without a plaid, without a dirk, etc.

Hey, wear what you want to wear when you want to wear it.
Although I'm an Orthodox priest, I'm not a purist.

As long as you wear it well, the belt and vest will be fine together. Just understand what you are doing, and why, and enjoy yourself.

With apologies to those who know more, and therefore look better, than I.

I think those threads say not to wear a belt with a waistcoat with a PC or Argyle. Wearing a belt with a PC or Argyle is fine, especially when you are not wearing a waistcoat.

The traditional rule is a kilt belt should not be worn with a vest (waistcoat) regardless of which jacket you wear. Some in the US ignore this rule. A member of this forum mentioned using a dirk belt, which I hadn't heard of before. I don't really know what a dirk belt is, but I suppose it is thinner and easier to hide under a vest than a traditional kilt belt.

I found this link describing Scottish military dress. Looks to me that a dirk belt is similar to a kilt belt, only that it was a few extra leather straps to attach to the dirk scabbard.

there is a good pic of a few dirk belts with descriptions here:

I always understood that the term dirk belt was another name for a kilt belt (same as in Kilted KT's avatar), because that is where the dirk is hung from.

I don't mean to step on anyones toes here but let's use some common sense about this problem. I don't wear a dirk with an Argyle, I wear it with the PC. If I wear it with the PC I wear my kilt belt to suspend the dirk frog. If you're going to wear a dirk with the PC you simply wear the dirk with the PC and you suspend it from the kilt belt. If there is reason to wear the belt with a PC and vest what better reason than to suspend the dirk?

    Chris.
