Freelander Sporran review
Ok, this is a long time coming as I had promised this to Freelander and Sten Rune some time ago.
Earlier this year I had tried to order a kid’s sporran for my son. The company I was trying to deal with was not to keen on correspondence and obviously didn’t need any more orders at that time. So I decided to give my son my old Celtic Empire sporran and to replace it with a new brown sporran for myself. I was telling Freelander this and in his infinite wisdom decided I should get a Freelander sporran
So in late December I received a package from Norway containing this amazing looking, feeling, smelling sporran from David and Sten Rune.

The sporran is made from very soft leather, the sewing is great, and the reindeer and leather cords are perfect for closing and tightening the sporran. The mouth of the sporran allows a mitt as big as mine to reach what I need without feeling like I am trying to reach into a mouse hole for that last bit of cheese. I think it looks pretty dang fine with my Ancient Watson kilt and I know it's going to look dynamite with the Weathered MacKenzie kilt I am about to order.
I must admit that despite the fact that I have seen and held a Freelander sporran before, and despite the fact that I have seen dozens in pictures, and that I like to see two great guys doing well in their side business, I was unprepared for just how cool these sporrans are. I mean this thing is incredible…..it expands to the size of my head, it shrinks down for a more sleek look, it weights very little, and as many have stated, it holds a boatload of stuff!!!
I have been wearing kilts for about 4 years now and I have always had the typical black leather day sporran or the soft leather sporran from Celtic Empire, but what a difference. New Years eve, I had a flask, my mobile, my wallet (I usually need to take a bank card, drivers license, and cash in a money clip), keys, etc and the thing was far from full. Plus it didn’t feel like it weighed a ton.
Now I was weary when Freelander started posting about the sporrans he and his mate Sten Rune had been making, but who wouldn’t be weary about a sporran made from a cereal packet and a bin liner http://www.freelandersporrans.com/cm...f/DSC00391.jpg I am glad I took the plunge and got one of the best sporrans available for casual wear. This sporran is going to see a ton of wear in the next few weeks/months/years.
I have seen positive review after positive review of not only the sporrans, but about the level of service and personal attention from David and Sten Rune. I am just happy to have become part of the Freelander clan. If you are on the fence about ordering a Freelander, don’t be. These are great sporrans and the level of personal attention is fantastic. There may be cheaper sporrans out there, but like kilts you get what you pay for and nothing is better than attention to detail from a craftsman.
One word of warning about these sporrans. I have it on good authority that David and Sten Rune are bringing a couple to Ferintosh this weekend, so the Ferintosh 11 be warned as I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse at a few yesterday. Be prepared to part with some $$ and be the envy of some of the other guests when you end up being tempted by one of these beauties.
I would be remiss to discuss how great the sporran is without mentioning the nice leather sporran strap the holds it up. This was courtesy of our esteemed member Canuck of www.rkilts.com . If your kilts are half as nice and have half the attention to detail and craftsmanship that these sporran straps do, than you are one heck of a fine kilt maker and craftsman. Thank you Robert for the great straps to hold up a fine sporran.
Now, don't just take my word for it, go and visit these guys and order yourself some of the coolest kilt accesories around. www.freelandersporrans.com

That is an outstanding review. I've already decided sometime back I am going to buy one. But, with all the tartan and such out there haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for the nudge though.

Colin, you pretty much nailed it. I've got a two-tone freelander myself, with reindeer and a handcast pewter Midgaards orm. They are AWESOME!!!

I have one (the same model as pictured in Colin's post), and except while I've been hiking, I've worn it every day for the past year. The only thing I would replace my Freelander sporran with is another Freelander sporran. I need one in black as well.
Andrew.

As another Freelander Sporran owner I heartily agree with Colin's excellent review! It is my favorite sporran hands down! I got mine back in July (for anyone who wants to see how consistant the workmanship David and Sten do is, compare Colin's review with my earlier one)

Colin,
That's a handsome piece. The more you use it the more you will love it.
Cheers

Thanks Colin for the review, I do need another day sporran, this review has helped me figure out what to get, I was leaning toward a Freelander anyway, but thanks for telling us all about your experience with a fine product.

Jeez, that review was a little vague and hazy Colin. How do you really feel?
