Horse hair and goat hair sporrans?
Hi guys. I've been thinking about getting myself a goathair sporran with horsehair tassles and a white metal cantle.
I've mainly seen pipe bands wearing these - but when the odd civilian wears one it tends to be on a formal occassion. There've been planty pictures posted on here from the last century all the way back to paintings from the 17th century of civilians wearing these sporrans with tweed jackets... although this may just have been a periodic fashion thing?
I'm wondering what you guys think about when this sort of sporran should be worn - and with what jackets etc.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I think they look very nice when worn as part of formal attire. See the link, below for some great examples:

Well, I am with you here Paul. I am looking for the same thing, though for me it would be more a piping style. It seems to be the one common thread, the one thing that was worn up untill, I dunno, probably the early twentieth.

I have a couple of different "standard" dress sporrans, and two fox mask sporrans that I would probably defer to for formal wear in lieu of a horsehair sporran, myself. I just don't think I could get used to looking down at a "ZZ Top" full mask sporran in my lap at a formal dinner party. The regular fox mask sporrans are unusual enough.
I do think they look great on pipers, the miliitary units, and even on many other forum members in their photos. I just think with my height the added verticality of a horehair sporran would be more comical. The angora ones look great, too, and would probably be less of an issue, but I think I am set for now, unless I find something really special.

The metal cantle indicates a black- or white-tie event.

J. Charles Thompson. (But, I've noticed that my copy is missing. Apparently, somebody nabbed it off my display table at one of my Highland games.)

I see that a few are also wearing a belt and a waistcoat without a dirk. When will this insanity end!
(Actually, I miswrote because I meant a metal cantle combined with a fur sporran.)
