    Horse hair sporran

    Hi everyone,

I bought this sporran on ebay and I'm now looking for someone to help me do a few repairs on it.

    It needs a new cantle,

and some fixes to the inside where the tassels are held,

but all in all it's in not too bad of shape.

I would also like to get a sporran strap made for it too. Does anyone have any suggestions as to who might be able to help fix this for me?

    Thanks

Oconee leather works would be able to help you with a sporran strap/belt.

As far as a cantle is concerned, ebay may be a good choice once again!

Elegant Scotland (just google the name) have pewter canters for sale and just get some split rings to replace the paper clips holding the tassell chains in.

The sporran cantles by Elegant Scotland are a bit costly but there is a American guy on Ebay US that sells cheaper cantles

There were a couple if used electroplate cantles on ebay a couple of days ago...

A leather one might look nice though...

This is a fantastic photo of how the hair tufts are attached! I've not seen this before. Thanks for posting this.

Looking at the holes for mounting the cantles (depending on their spacing, I don't think you will have much trouble finding a cantle for it. You'll just need to identify the style you want. Take a look at L & M Highland Outfitter's Sporran Builder and you'll see 3 or 4 different cantle styles commonly seen on hair sporrans. Then, there are also leather cantles you could use for a different look.

    Congrats on a nice find

Maybe give Josh from Skye Highland Outfitters a call. He does some of the nicest looking hair sporrans I have found.

What I would suggest is to make an arrangement with the cantle seller if you do this project yourself. Why the arrangement? Chances are that a cantle bought elswhere will not fit the intended sporran. Sporrans are made around the cantle, and not vice versa. The good news is that you have a MoD sporran which should accomidate most military style backings.

Oh yeah...the arrangement-Make sure you can return the cantle if it doesn't fit.

The sporran seems to be made the way we used to make native american horse hair roach headdresses. That process is very labor intensive as each bundle of hair has to be tied on a cord.

The guy on ebay that sells cantles is lythgoe sporrans I believe.
