    Hose?

OK, I've been argueing over this with myself for a while now, and I thought I'd ask: is hose necesary when wearing the kilt? I believe it is necesary for formal wear, but casual? I guess you could do both, but on a hot day, the long hose is not a good idea. On some of the more comtemporary kilts (Utilikilts, Amerikilts, etc.) the hose is not really worn, but on traditional style kilts? You see, I'm tryin g to get a more comtemporary(ish) look but still retaining that highland dress we know and love. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't want this dressy look everytime I wear the kilt (though, I never do, but it's only a figure of speech)

I suppose you could wear some long socks or something in place of them, but I'm not sure.

    Thought?

I'll always wear kilt hose whether worn up and cuffed or scroonched down...sorry, but nothing else really looks right to me. Obviously, one of the looks that we all want to avoid is the "skirt with knee-socks" look and the kilt hose worn up and cuffed looks distinctly different form that. The scroonched look leaves a little more leeway depending on the height of the boots that you're wearing...I suppose that some socks that are tall socks as opposed to kilt hose could be successfully scroonched with the right boots.

Just me...as they say on the internet YMMV.

Surely a perusal of the "casual" pictures thread will answer the question for you.

I'm of the opinion that if it's cold out, I wear hose. If it's warm, I just wear some normal socks and my boots; the socks dont' even stick out of the top of the boots.

Spookily enough I just (like 20 minutes ago) got my first pairs of black wool hose. I've only been wearing regular thick black socks rolled down with hiking boots until now but I can definitely tell the difference. The hose are very comfortable and it's nice to have that option of going from rolled down to pulled up should the weather change. So while they weren't a priority for me, I'll be wearing them whenever I'm kilted from now on

If I'm going to wear one of my kilts, then I'm getting dressed up for a reason. When I wear my kilt to school, I've got the hose up and tied down with garters. If I'm going to go hiking, it's a toss up depending on the terrain (lots of scrub and sage brush out here) but I prefer to wear the hose up (the hose tends to protect my shins from scrapes). When I'm fly fishing, then, that is another story in itself! It's all personal prefference and what feels right by you. Go for the look that feels right for the situation.
