Hose Advice (Dress Macpherson)
I'm moving from a Red MacPherson to an Ancient Dress Macpherson (http://www.lochcarron.com/tartanstro...s_ancient.html).
With the Red, I've either worn Green hose with red flashes or Cream with either the red or green. I'm not sure either one of those will look good with the new tartan, especially for formal wear.
Thoughts?

I think my two top choices would be Maroon or Yellow, either would bring out the thin line in the tartan. With my MacPherson Red I've worn blue hose to great effect. Of course this all depends, you do not have to match, or on the other hand you could match the hose to a shirt for example.

As I assume you will be wearing this kilt for evening formal evenys, I would suggest getting some black and white diced hose, or better yet, black, white and red diced hose.
Plain red/maroon hose will work too.
Cluny Macpherson wears these hose in the evening:

For formal wear I would consider black with maroon flashes, second choice dark or dull yellow flashes. You could also pull the reverse with maroon hose but then you are left with black flashes, or yellow flashes. I think for dress I would avoid yellow hose. Cream are generic, and you could wear any of the three color flashes, but stay away from the true white hose (on this forum generally considered a no no, especially in dress occasions, although I do not hesitate myself to wear the white in the right combinations). If you have the cash you could get maroon bodied hose with the black, white, yellow and or maroon in any combo for hose toppers, or do the custom solid body tartan top hose that skyehighlandoutfitters sells, which could look smashing. Also consider unwearoutablehose for their solid body hose with various multicolor tops, also customed to your colors and patterns of choice.

For formal wear I could not agree with Sandford more, those hose would be perfect and would set off any outfit perfectly.

I like the Almostunwearoutables in the Aln hose top pattern in Black body/black and white tops, Mysecond choice from them would be maroon body/ tops of maroon plus white or black.
Sandy and MacMurdo are right that matching tartan hose are most proper for formal settings if you can afford them----typically $140 and up for a pair customed to your tartan.

What about getting flashes in the tartan as long as I'm ordering the kilt?

Yes I'd get them, however I would also look into red traditional garter ties, you can get them at may retailers including the Scottish Tartan Museum

There are some of us ("traditionalists") who lump tartan garter flashes into the same catagory as white hose!

I have to agree with JSFMACLJR-- in my book tartan garter flashes fall into the "matching tie and hankie" category. Me thinks sold colours better suit a gentleman.
