    Hose Topper Thingy's

Can somebody explain the purpose of hose toppers or whatever they're called? I've seen some really nice looking ones, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what role they play in an outfit...

Basically, they are an alternative to more expensive hose that have a permanently attached decorative cuff. You can also swap them between hose of varying colors, and replace the hose when toes/heels wear out but keep using the cuffs with new hose. Not the same look as custom-matched, hand-knit hose but an alternative for everyday wear.

I have 4 pairs of Sydnie's Hose Toppers and they are fantastic. I have gotten compliments nearly everytime I wear them. She is correct about being able to swap them with different hose. I have one pair that go ideally with both a solid forest green or a lovat green. I would personally recommend them.

I have one pair of Sydnie's and two of Big Mikey's. They really spruce up an outfit.

I won a pair of Big Mikey's several months ago in a contest he was running. He custom made them of yarn color and pattern matched to my Ancient Caledonia Kingussie (Keltoi)kilt and they look great with about 4 or 5 different color solid hose I can wear underneath them. Normally I would wear a multicolor fancy hose with most kilts if at all dressy, either argyll tops, pattern tops, diced or full argylls, and this is a much less expensive option that allows for multiple top and hose body combinations to be worn with any given matching kilt. My review:

They can even make a white pair of hose (normally taboo to most) look very good as they add that additional splash and pattern of color to the stark white of the hose body.

What keeps the toppers in position? I have seen one pic on line of one falling down, but I assume they do not always do that since people keep wearing them.

On most people, the tension of the knit cuff itself is enough to keep it in place (unless you are sword-fighting or -dancing, I suppose!). "Spindleshanks" might need either a smaller than usual size, or a round of light elastic built into the cuff. I have also made larger than usual cuffs with elastic inside to allay any fear of sagging.

Once the cuffs have been worn and stretched a bit, they can be restored to original size by gently pulling top and bottom, all the way around the circumference. I include instructions on this, as well as washing info, with every pair sent.

So... If I had one kilt (for the sake of argument, let's say in Douglas Modern), I could purchase a black or gray pairs of hose, and get different hose toppers to compliment my shirts?
