How about these shoes?
Seeking advice,
Are these shoes acceptable for wearing with my kilt for a more dressed up look?

I"m not sure I like the look of the laces on the Ghillie Brogues.
Would this be a good substitute?

Unless you're going for a full traditional formal look those shoes should be just fine.

Nice shoes. I think they'd dress up a kilt very well. The rest is a matter of hose, flashes or none, shirt, tie or none, jacket, sporran -- getting it all to look good together.
My look tends towards casual, so I'll leave the details of formal style to the snazzy dressers of our group.
Hamish, you're wanted!

They'll be just fine for Normal wear and for things where Ghilles would be a little "over the top"
Use long hose pulled up with shoes. and I like to push the hose down when using boots for a more casual look. Although here in Norway in the winter I use more often than not Boots with the hose pulled up too.
In all it give a better Balance to your look

I couldn't have put it better, David. (Yes, Rigged, I am answering your call!! ).
Of course, the Norwegian winters are much harsher that those we have here in the UK, but I don't think I have ever worn boots with pulled-up hose (although I may have done in my virgin kilting days!). Nowadays, no matter what the weather, if I need to wear boots then down goes the hose.
Those shoes, Blk_watch, will do very well indeed for "a more dressed up look" - but you will need pulled-up kilt hose, not ankle socks or mid-calf socks, to achieve the right effect.
I too dislike the look of the traditional Ghillie shoes and, in fact, I have never owned any - although I am considering buying a pair to wear with my Prince Charlie at black-tie 'dos'. I have a few of those coming up in the spring.

Hi David,
I would wear the long hose pulled up with these shoes for a more dressy (meaning a bit more formal look. ) look.
I really do like the sweater with the hose pushed down. It's a more casual and very masculine look. I refer to your and Graham's pictures as a model of how to wear a kilt
Thanks for the advice

Dana,
In my opinion and this is only my opinion, these shoes would be fine if you were wearing a nice sweater or even a jacobite shirt. But I personally feel that as soon as you but on a tie or jacket then ghillie brogues (with hose and flashes) are the way to go.

Just to toss my cent and a half worth into the fray... I tried a pair of the ghillie brogues and found out very quickly that I can't (meaning won't) wear them. Anything tied around my ankle, even loosely, drives me even more nuts than I already am. Try a pair of corfams, I know ya got some.

With the bitter winter upon us here in Ontario, I'm wearing mine up! In fact I wore 2 pairs at once yesterday and was darn glad I did.

It's a look that I grew to like with a jacket and tie once I learned to tie them properly. Although I would never consider wearing them casually. They have their place.
