Irish Stick Fighting
:mods: if this is not the right place for this please move.
I thought this might be of interest to the people who own Blackthorn Canes or similar ones.
I have started taking Irish stick fighting in Milton, Ont. so this might have limited appeal. But believe me it is quite a workout. If anyone want further Info please PM me.

From what I've seen of Irish stick fighting at western martial arts conferences, its interesting from a cultural heritage stand point, but not as useful as the Filipino stick arts. Its great that you have a local teacher.
Best regards,
Jake

P.S. I usually post Celtic martial arts threads in the off topic forum.

Shouldn't this be in the Kilted Martial Arts Forum? Oh wait... there isn't a Kilted Martial Arts Forum, is there?

yes
I have tried doyles style, he is in canada, it was fun! But with a history of Arnis I found it to be kind of like kung-fu or karate, not worth a darn in a real self defense situation! But it is a neat art form. Though I would never challenge doyle, he has a lot of experience, and this is a personal family art passed down through many generations. These were men who protected distilllery's! Never mess with a mans whiskey!
I have been doing sticks, pugilism, and wrestling for a few years now and I can tell you blackthornes are a menacing weapon if used cave-man style, but not in boxing stance or irish stance. Look at
http://www.johnwhurley.com/
He has a book out I purschased some years ago, very neat historical stuff! They show the "Shelaleigh" as a 4' stick though. And holding it as an "overguard" position. Very neat idea, but I still wouldn't try this against siniwali.
Also I have been making sparing sticks for a couple years, those sticks at the hardware store last about 2 hits! If interested in making some sticks PM me or join the yahoo "Bata" group. Great guys in there!
If your ever in the midwest states look me up!
