'Kilt' Jackets
So I'm thinking about the tweed blazer I just ordered - and I then recall seeing a kilted man in a TV interview wearing a blazer. So, I do a google, and find this:
My question, what's wrong with wearing kilts and blazers? I'm not that well versed, but to me this looks like a standard tweed blazer.

It looks okay when he's standing posed like that, but when he moves about the rectangular corners are going to cover half his sporran.
This post is a natural product made from Recycled electrons. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws or defects.

What's with the boots? The man looks odd.

The sporran, in it's basic form, serves a function, and doesn't have to be seen to serve its function.
As for the comments about his boots, or size of his jacket let's stay focused and discuss the look of the jacket with a kilt.

I like the green flashes, and the subtle curve of the jacket flap. Works for me!

OK focusing on the jacket, a jacket like that is simply too long, it is done, however to my eye it always looks off, as you are covering quite a bit of your kilt. Most people will never notice, however if you are at event with people dressed in kilt jackets you will look the odd man out. Take a look at the 10 looks thread Jamie and myself did it shows how a kilt jacket looks with a kilt, much more flattering, if you ask me.

OK . . .focus.
It doesn't look good. Sorry.
In the back, the tail of the jacket will cover some of the pleating and deter the sway of the kilt. (That famous sway is a major draw to the look of the kilt, at least for some ladies.)
In the front, it hangs too far down and doesn't split as a proper jacket does. And, even though a sporran would serve its function if worn in the back like a fanny pack, the fact is that it is also a stylistic piece that should be seen.
You can wear whatever you like, of course. We don't care. But a sports coat does not ever look so good as a kilt jacket. That's why we wear kilt jackets. ith:

The jacket in the first photo (I believe that is the Scottish actor Brian Cox, btw) is not a Blazer, but a sportcoat. A Blazer is a double-breasted jacket, similar to a boating/rowing jacket or a reefer jacket, like the ones worn by Naval officers. A single-breated "blazer" is sometimes known as a "club jacket".
To me, a blazer isn't Highland attire, so it just doesn't look "right" to my eyes. It looks better with grey flannels or even tartan trews, such as Government Sett (Black Watch). I know the regimental association of the Cameronian regiment wears trews in Douglas tartan with single-breasted jackets in rifle green:

While you will find photographs from the mid 19th century showing some gentlemen wearing "sack suits" with kilts (the ghillies of the Balmoral estate and Prince Frederick William of Prussia, for example), I would agree with McMurdo that a "Saxon" jacket worn with Highland attire tends to stand out among jackets tailored to be worn with a kilt.

Todd
