Kilt Pins??
Hi,
New to the forum and got a question for all of you. Let's say I wanted to make my own custom kilt pin from scratch about 2 to 3.5 inches long; where or who would you guys tell me to talk to or look up? I want to get over 100 of these done up for a kilt group I run with and I'm sure I will be getting more.
Thank you.

Hello, and a warm from Boston, Massachusetts. What are your goals in constructing the kilt pins?
What type of back are you looking into. Brooch pin, dual studs, Safety pin, Magnetic... What type of face are you planning? Pewter, Brass, Steel, or softer materials like plastics, fabrics, wood, antler, ...???
Most of this can be accomplished with a production plan.
1.) design display face
2.) manufacture display face in quantity needed
3.) acquire desired backing
4.) assemble
5.) int:

personnally I would do it myself with help from the local blacksmith group. I know a bit about pouring metal as it is a hobby that I have. I think that making 100 pins would be very cumbersom youd need to design it, then make a template. I suggest wood or clay, then you need some casting clay or some wax. then you need someone with a metalurgical background to tell you how much silver, nickle, and lead to mix up and melt down. after you cast them all, you'd need to hand sand them all to polish them. then all it is is attaching the back.
thats all if you doing it in a shiny silver like metal

they seem to do them for large groups.
it might be better to do this one through someone else. I don't even really know all that much about casting.

Hm, funny I was just wondering how long the needle needed to be on a kilt pin.
I plan on making some of my own... Iron Maiden and Van Halen kilt pins!!

I plan on making three different types of pins and I would probably use brass or nickle plated steel.
