Leather Jean Jacket
So J. Peterman's catalog offered a leather jean jacket in their current catalog http://jpeterman.com/product~cat~100...u~MOW+2482.asp
I'm a jean jacket junkie and love wearing jean jackets with my kilts in lieu of sporrans. And, I own two leather kilts.
But, I'm also a bit skeptical of catalog copy that has a lot of fancy flowery stories about the product and little hard information. I called J. Peterman for more info and they said they'd take my questions and email me. They did, but it took about three more email exchanges to get more solid information that led me to buy.
I found out that the leather jean jacket was made from "genuine leather" which was okay, not the best but its just a jean jacket. Its made from calf splits and was tanned in Italy.
They sell themselves short with their adjectives and stories. When the jacket arrived it was much better than I'd expected. Peterman never mentions that it is fully lined. There's a deep inside left chest pocket, and the handwarmer pockets are deep enough for lots of "stuff" if you're not gonna wear a sporran. There are adjustable side tabs with buttons like on cotton jean jackets. Cut seems to be the same as with cotton jean jackets. The brass buttons were covered with tissue during transport and there were those little bags of silica to absorb moisture in the handwarmer pockets.
This is a quality jacket for sure. Its not inexpensive at $248.00 but it is worth that price and the value is there.
Its too hot for me to be wearing it now so no actual pics. The painting on the Peterman website above is accurate though.
So, if you're a jean jacket with kilts guy too, and like leather jackets, take a look.

Good score! I've periodically bought things from J. Peterman since the late 80s and have never been disappointed in their quality. True, the watercolor filled catalogue with it's flowery prose does lead one to believe that the actual products are so much fluff but it's really not the case. I'm still waiting for the urban sombrero, though.

I've purchased a number of things from Peterman over the years, and have rarely been disappointed. The quality is usually pretty high, and what's more, the catalogue makes very good bathroom reading!

I checked the sizing guide which didn't help as far as matching L, XL, XXL, etc. to certain measurements.

Jack,
They like to have you call and give your measurements, then they'll figure your size. Their products come from so many varied places its hard to standardize.
They have an absolute satisfaction guarantee too.

That's because they're selling you a lifestyle - the clothes are ancillary.

Long-time leather tailor chiming in here:
YOU SCORED!
$248 is not a bad price for a quality leather jacket.
I wouldn't buy a new leather jacket for less than that. With leather garments, just as in a kilt purchase, you usually get what you pay for.
Just because a garment is labeled “genuine leather” does not mean it is good quality leather. Cheap, cardboard leather will crack, tear and end up in the garage sale pile. A good quality leather jacket will last a life time. (If taken care of properly.)

Ron. Now that is a thing of beauty...
I'm looking forward to photo's of you in it. As you've guessed I'm a denim jacket kind of guy and am often seen out and about in my 'Levi', kilted or otherwise. I would love one of those but £150 (today's exchange) is an awful lot to pay for a jacket.
I appreciate it's quality I'd be paying for but I think I'll save it and put it towards another strome 8 yarder.
Don't forget to post some pics when your weather cools off a bit.

I believe I own a similar jacket in suede:

Bought by my wife as a Christmas present for me about 12 years ago and has been my favourite since then.

Aye Chas, does look much the same. The Peterman is tailored the same as a jean jacket too. Obviously can't tell for sure from a pic, but the Peterman seems a bit more substantial as far as leather weight. But who knows.
Thanks for the pic.
