    My $4 sgian brew

About 10 years ago, I had my own dress sgian dhu. I really liked it, but I lost it at a gig 7 or 8 years ago. Since then, I've been looking for something to replace it that doesn't break the bank.

Then I discovered sgian brews, and figured I'd rather have something a bit more functional than a dullish knife. So I set about trying to find one that I like that isn't a bajillion dollars for what is essential a bottle opener.

I decided I wanted something a bit more day wear, so an antler or brown wood handle. Then I found this. It's the right length, and width, but maybe a little on the thick side, but still workable.

When it's in the sock, you can't tell that it's just a cheap bottle opener - but you also wouldn't be able to tell that it's an expensive bottle opener or fancy knife if I had one of those.

Not bad looking though like you said a bit thick. Im sure it will work fine and be functional when you have a cold bottle of brew in your hand needing opening. If you have any time, it didnt take me long, and some good carving knives and scrap wood you can fashion your own. Opener blanks can be found via google, all you need is a little time to do it. Photos of the one I made below.

I thought about making my own, but for $4, this was the better option.

Also, there's the fact that I have no woodworking skills whatsoever.

BrewerPaul, where did you get the black portions of the handle. Are they just a different color wood treatment?

Understand that one. 4 bucks is a bargin for a decent looking item. Guess Im always up for the challenge of making something so had to test my ability to not cut myself. Wear it well.

Rick Y the handle is cherry and the black portions are epoxy. I debated on what to use and how to keep it looking good. I also needed something I could carve and sand. Spent a bit of time at my Ace hardware store looking at all the different epoxy type cements and came up with the black/charcoal grey. Just used Watco oil so it has a matte finish. I could make it shiny but I dont care for the overly glossy.
