    new full-tang sgian

My new sgian dubh arrived in the mail this morning!

As anyone knows who has read my posts, I love a bargain and this is a great little knife for $10! It wasn't marketed as a sgian dubh by the eBay seller (c-knife2009), but it certainly looks like one to me. I would consider this a daywear sgian (not formal or evening wear) because of the simple wooden design and I'll be happy to have such a functional knife in my sock.

The knife is made by Colt and features a burl wood sheath with matching handle. It is full tang and the sheath has a magnet inside that keeps the knife in place. The blade is stainless steel (not sure what grade) and comes sharp out of the box.

The knife is made in China and the seller included a Chinese tassel for free! That's a sweet upgrade because the braided leather that came with the knife wasn't very nice.

Finally, there is gimping on both the back of the blade and on the sheath. I've never seen matching filework on a sheath before, has anyone else?

It's certainly a sgian dubh design, even if it isn't marketed that way. Very nice find!

Nice looking blade- hope it's sharp in the cutting department as well.

I've never seen a tassled Sgian Dubh- or have I, but in a previous life? Is this an old tradition or one that is just starting?

Very nice! Thanks for the tip!

I'd probably swap the wood sheath out for leather when actually wearing it in the hose, but that's no worries.

c-knife2009 does seem to have a stock of them but only puts up one auction at a time. eBay seller MooseCreekGear also sells them but lists them as a "skean dhu," so the auction prices seem to go a bit higher.

I'm sure there are other seller's around who carry the same product

One thing I thought of- a magnetic holder? Stainless steel isn't usually magnetic?

It is definitely sharp enough for any job I'm likely to require of it.

As for stainless steel, it is most certainly attracted to magnets. There appears to be some sort of thin magnet inside the wooden sheath that the knife blade adheres to.

And the tassel/lanyard... I'm not sure about any historical precedent but my other sgians don't have them. I'm not sure either how it will look with the tassel hanging down over my hose... I'll have to field test it and report back.

I got one of those myself a year or so ago and removed the lanyard. I like the design, but wish it was a bit larger and made of better materials, but for the price, it's hard to beat!

    Congrats and enjoy!
