    New Sgian

A couple of months ago, I taught myself how to make bullwhips. I posted a few pics on various forums that I frequent. A few days after I posted pics of my first one, I had two custom knife makers wanting to do a trade. One was for a hand-forged bush sword (tough machete) from Helm Forge. Another was for a nice EDC from Swenson Knives. James Helm from Helm Forge is an aquaintence of Michael Rader, an ABS Master Bladesmith. Michael seen pics of the whip that I made for James and really wanted one. After ironing out details of what was on the blanket we both got busy. I made for him a 10 foot nylon bullwhip, while he made for me a custom sgian dhu. I think he had it easier, as he usually makes high end kitchen knives and swords professionally, so making a little sgian was quite a nice change for him, he mentioned.
The blade is made from CruForge V. The handle is dark maple burl with textured copper.

If anyone is intereseted, here is the whip that I am sending him:

Very nice whip. Do you use strictly nylon? Does the handle swivel? Do you do longer lengths?

    Thanks, Gryphon.
So far I have only done nylon. It is easier and less expensive than making one in leather. One of these days I am going to get a hide and plait one.
The handle does not swivel. Then plaiting starts at the heel knot and ends at the fall knot (where the fall and cracker are attached).
This one has a 10 foot thong + 12 inch handle + 2.5 foot fall = 13.5 feet overall. It is the longest I've done or will probably ever do. Most of the previous whips I've made were 7-8 feet.
