New Sgian Dubh from Comrie Crafts
As you know I am not Scottish nor have any Scottish heritage but I enjoy kilts. This being said, when I get kilt accessories I tend to steer away from Scottish touches like thistles and such, hey my dress sporran has gold maple leaves on it. I've always searched for a unique sgian dubh with these criteria and have always admired Rab Gordon's products for their craftsmanship, no cheap plastic knock-offs for me. recently back to work and with some money burning a hole in my sporran I started searching once again and found Comrie Crafts. After humming and hawing over their bog oak and Damascus blade for £95 I decided on the box elder burl sgian for £60 (shipping included). that worked out to $110 Cdn and with our strong dollar would be slightly less than that in US greenbacks.
It has a 3½" stainless blade that is more a safety blade but can be worked to a keen edge. The handle is a box elder burl with a bullhorn cap and ebony trim, the workmanship is detailed that the wood seems almost plastic that I thought it was. Only in direct sunlight could I find that a minor defect in the wood that led me to belief otherwise. The handle measures in at about 3¼". the thick leather scabbard has a Celtic embossing and holds tightly, I have no concern that it will loosen in my hose and I sure that it will prove to be very comfortable there.
It arrived fast in and packaged well. I paid through PayPal and offered the proprietor an opportunity to charge extra for shipping to Canada which ended up being naught. The prices shown on the website include postage and packaging to what I thought was only within Great Britain.
It is a very well made, quality piece that I will proudly wear. As for down-tone "Scottishness" of my sgian dubh I'll let you decide. Just be sure to check out Comrie crafts if you're in the market for a reasonably priced hand crafted and unique sgian.

Congratulations Grant, that really is a beauty. I look forward to seeing it in person. The only problem is it looks more substantial than your spindle shank, and will therefore dwarf your leg.

That is really nice looking Grant!

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I totally agree with Glen here.

Surprisingly no. It's a rather stealthy size which...
STOP CALLING ME SPINDLE SHANKS!!! I am aerodynamically and hydrodynamically perfect after years of sculpting by the wind from riding motorcycles and saving wealthy boaters.

Very nice. Does that blade have an edge? I've noticed that some sites come out and say that their knives are for display purposes only, but other don't mentioned the sharpness issue at all.
