    New Sgian (large-ish photos)

    Mornin' folks.

    I purchased this sgian dubh from Shane of Red Dog Forge. I met him at a vendor's fair. He didn't have any completed sgians up for sale at the time and that's what I was looking for. I paid up front and he constructed and sent me a knife he believed I would like. Personally, I do like it a lot, but I'm not well-versed in these matters. I figured I would offer it up for critique by those who are more-so. Please tell me what you think.

    Did he give you any description of the materials and processes that went into building this sgian?

    It sure looks nice!

    It looks very nice. I like the forged blade.

    I would have wanted one side flatter than the other for wearing against the leg. Personal preference.

    Calico;

    I was under the impression that he was going to make one side flatter and was a little surprised that they were the same.

    I have requested information on the materials used. He'll probably get back to me soon.

    What are the measurements and did it come with a sheath?

    It is a very unique looking knife and the different patterns in the materials are striking. Not entirely sgian dubh in design though...

    3.5" on the blade and about the same for the handle.

    I love working with bocote (the wood in the handle). Sometimes when working it down, unexpected patterns jump out.
    I agree, it looks nice, but there are some small things that would make it better as a sgian: thinner handle, slightly different blade shape.

    The blade is some sort of damascus. It has been either acid or vinegar etched to brig out those designs. Usually well done damascus blades are top quality. Its a good looking knife for sure.
