Nice vest for wearing with your kilt
I had my hands on a Filson Mackinaw vest the other day... wool, unlined, heavy, definitely felt quality, and a straight bottom to it. Ideal with a kilt.

sadly the one I had my hands on had a couple of holes in it and I couldn't decided if they were just holes or moth nibbles... so, didn't take the chance.
Oh! and it's made in the USA...

Love Filson's gear - have a grey vest like that I sometimes wear with kilts - also have their lighter travel vest that I wear with kilts. They have some wool bomber jackets too. Pricy stuff, but great value - quality goods. Used to wear a Filson cruiser jacket working underground in the mines. Take a look at Scottevests too. Vests can be a wonderful alternative to the sporran. More freedom - especially when hiking kilted - and shows more of the apron tartan.

"I'll have a kilt please, a nice hand sewn tartan, 16 ounce Strome. Oh, and a sporran on the side, with a strap please."

Those vests are remarkable! I remember when I was living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, they were a must have in the winter. My father had, for many years, a wool jacket and pants that he wore when deer hunting, the jacket was a Filson and ideal for deer in the north woods. I love them.

Filson makes some great products. I look for used ones as they are built to last. Woolrich has a new line of lined tweed-like wool vest also. I've been living in my all Winter up here in Maine.

I was watching the prices on eBay for Filson Mackinaw vests, and the used ones usually go for $60-$80 US.
The Filsons never seem to show up in the local second-hand stores, in any sizes.
But I've stopped looking as I recently found a 70% wool vest, a Hudson's Bay import in a red/green bumbee tartan, for $6. I wouldn't wear it with a kilt, but it certainly helps warm up the morning commute.

Do check out the Woolrich one's also. I've owned 2 and they are great. Built as well as the Filson but I only paid 45.00 for mine on sale. I sold the old one I had for 30.00 after wearing it a decade. It still looked great and held its' value. I'll post a pic soon with a kilt and the vest. It has a tweed look and has a classic waistcoat look.

I like these waistcoats from the 1860s

I found one very similar at an ordinary shop in a mall... Pennys? Maceys?

Love my Filson vest, I've been wearing mine for 10 years, and it's still going strong.

+ eleventy on Filson quality.
I have a pair of the mackinaw pants, I suspect it is the same cloth, I bought mine in I think January of 2009 and they will probably last another 10 -15 years - easy.

And I have one of the guide shirts. I know I bought it June of 2008 and I just can't seem to wear it out, Lord knows I have been trying. I expect the one guide shirt I have already will last at least as long as three pairs of Carhartt pants.

I have a buddy with a tin cloth coat, he can't remember when he bought it, but it was before he got married and his oldest is now 11.
I'll watch for the vest, may order one in. My local purveyor doesn't carry them that I have noticed. I had no idea.
