Nifty sock idea
I only own one set of flashes, so I am tugging at my socks a lot. I read on Xmarks about using rubber bands. That idea was just so riduculous, I could never do it.
So, I stole,....er...borrowed a pair of hair ties from the wife, and they work great.
Now feel free to tell me why I should not do that.
.........And, with that post, I am a samurai.

I took one of my flashes down to the neighborhood yardage shop so I would get the right kind of ribbon which all the uardage shops have and bought some different colors of ribbon for the flashes and some 1/2" elastic and a needle and thread and a few stuck fingers later I had a selection of flashes in whatever color I cared to use. Remember, no matter how bad a job of sewing you do to put your flashes together it's all covered up by the hose when it's folded over.

So the difference is that a rubber band coverd in fabric is OK, but a plain rubber band is not? Just curious because I use rubber bands myself when I either don't want to wear flashes, or don't have an appropriate color.

My 5-minute flashes
Norby -- Congrats on your promotion!
Here is how I solved the flash problem. I used rubber bands once and they cut off the circulation in my legs, so I went to 1.5" elastic tape. Velcro holds them together, and if you wrap them right the hooks never contact your sock. The flashes are grosgrain ribbon, which comes in any color you could ever need. The flashes are sewed together as you see here, with another piece about 3" long stitched in perpedicularly to hold the two flashes together. The whole thing just slips over the elastic, so I only need one elastic for all my different flash colors.
Maybe I should put together another "build-along"?

Actually I didn't have any rubber bands in the home that were wide enough, so I used the hairbands. The rubber bands idea was great (did you post that tip?), I was just out of them. I think both ideas are great, I'm just feeling a little proud of my 2 cents.

I really dislike it when my flashes are connected with velcro, and sometimes the metal clasps can seem a bit clunky.
So I'm thinking, why can't a set of flashes be made with a solid loop of elastic? Why does it need a clasp? If I size the elastic to my legs, I could then just slip them on and off before I put on my shoes. I know it would be a bit like a garter, but why not?

Could also use some ribbon. Tie it around the leg, do a normal shoelace style knot, turn over the kilt hose, then let the loops and tails of the ribbon pieces stick out from underneath the turndown. Then, if you're longhaired and want to go with the 18th century look, use the rest of the ribbon to tie your ponytail.

I wear elastics without flashes for casual dress, but I do wear flashes when going formal.

OK, thought you did not like the rubber bands and did not understand that, and I don't know if that was my idea or not. Not having rubber bands is understandable. However, I do like your idea. I have found a pair of rubber bands that fit my legs perfectly without cutting off circulation and I keep them on my dresser with my flashes! Now I can raid my wife's hair ties, and I think that they will work just as well.
Great idea.

I guess I have big calfs because the only time I need the garter is when I wear the flashes for formal wear other wise just the kilt socks stay up by them self.
