Question Ok I should know this but....

As I said in the tile I sould know this and I'm sure it has been covered somewhere but what is the difference between (is there a difference?) a sporran strap and a standard 1" casual street belt? Secondly are they interchangable? Ok today's dumb question has been asked.

BTW: HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY EVERYONE!!!!!!!

A sporran strap would buckle like a regular belt, but have hooks that snap on the rings on the back of the sporran. I would expect this is necesary to make the stap lie flat.

You COULD remove the little piece of leather and rings from loop on the back the sporran and just run a narrow belt through there, but I'm betting it would not hang right.

Of course, my answer does not take different sporran construction designs into account.

My sporran strap is really just a belt - it doesn't have the hooks. It was sold as a sporran strap. It hangs just fine, especially when there's anything in the sporran; the weight holds it down. The only problem I have with it is that the sporran sometimes slides to one side or the other when I walk, and I have to adjust it to centre once in a while.

I find I actually like the plain belt strap over the types with hooks. If I want to go dressier, I will use the hooks. The strap does have problems with sliding to the side at times, but it's really handy to slide the sporran to the side when answering calls of nature.

The D rings and hooks are a comparatively new idea. Traditionally, the sporran strap just runs through two slots in the back of the sporran itself. A sporran strap was always just a straightforward strap (ie: in one section, not two). That was how I was brought up with them fifty years ago, and that is how I prefer them.

Only chain straps for Dress Sporrans had the D rings and hooks, because the chain could hardly run smoothly through the back of the sporran.

Ideally, a one-section sporran strap should be no wider than 3/4".
