Opinions on ebay sgian
The seller has no information on this sgian. In your humble opinion, what does he have? Handmade, really silver, hand carved wood?

Thanks

Reserching those hallmarks will tell you where, when, & who the silversmith was.

Very nice! But you have to ask yourself what it is truly worth to me? Taht's the price for two SWK kilts, and more than half the price for an USA kilt.

David,
For that kind of money I would be looking at Rab Gordon's sgian dubhs.

Why go with someone you don't know when for a little more you can go with an X Marker that is vouched for by some respected members of this forum.
Rab shows his work in nice detail on his site.
I'd check him out.
Cheers

Looks like a very nice vintage quality sgian dubh....not expensive either.
In Scotland....£300 and up, so.....go for it!

It looks like a good sgian dubh no doubt about that, however I would br hard pressed to part with that much $ for an accessory that is coming from an unknown source, when as Panache so rightly pointed out.

I have been burned slightly on a few auction items. Sellers that had great reviews still substitute lesser items on occasion. This guy may be legit, but I would rather hold it in my hands and examine it when dropping that kind of coin. If you buy it, and it's great, I will of course be very envious!

Looks legit to me and the guy has a good feedback rating.
If you want a vintage sgian dubh, I say go for it.
Rab Gordon's blades are very nice, but some guys want a blade with some age and history. If that's you, this looks like a deal.

Thanks guys, closed at about $200, I missed it as I got tied up today. I have learned more. It is a well done antique, and would have cost significantly more to replace in the market., especially with the amount of silver involved.
I like Rab's stuff, but his start at $250 and go up. I really like the vintage stuff. but I never cry over lost auctions as another will come up. Maybe I should have my in laws start looking at the shops they frequent.

That is a good idea, everytime my folks or I go into antique stores and such I have given them a list to look for, plus I have a few things that linger in the back of my mind to look for. You would be surprised what you can find in some out of the way knick knack places in the area of the Appalachians, especially in NC, SC, TN and N GA.
