Pattern for a MoD Culloden Sporran
I apologize if this isn't the correct forum for this but ...
I received my Brass MoD "Culloden" Cantle in the mail yesterday and I would like to try my hand at making a goat hair sporran for it. Does anyone have a pattern for one? I am hoping to make one and pray it turns out well.

Brian , I like your idea , very fond of goat hair sporrans ( straight not curly ) . Can't remember if I've seen a brass MoD cantle used with goat hair , but I can see that working out .
I don't have a pattern for you on the goat hair part , but here is an old thread that is very informative and useful on making the bag . This thread can help you on making and sizing a bag which would be the first part of making the sporran .
Although this thread is on the subject of making a different kind of sporran , it still gives you the pattern and size for making the bag ... for which you could attach the goat hair . Not suggesting that you make this very sporran and attach goat hair .... just saying there is a useful pattern here for the bag .

As far as working with goat hair ... others will have to weigh in , I understand that it can be a bit of challenge but very doable .
All things said , good luck and I do love the goat hair .
Cheers , Mike

I agree, I haven't seen a goat hair sporran with a MOD cantle, but I think it would look great. Actually, my newest MOD cantle is at Artificer's shop waiting its turn, and it will become a goat hair sporran. I'll be very interested to see how yours turns out!
I have built a leather bag for a MOD cantle, but not one with fur or hair, so I can't be of any help on a pattern. That's why I sent mine to Scott. I'll let him figure it out.

I'm actually going to base my leather bag off your your pattern, Tobus. I can't wait to see how these goat hair sporrans turn out - maybe I'll make a second bag for mine someday.

Tobus,
What color of goat are you going with? I am thinking black. And of course straight not curly. Scott said it would be December before he could get to it. So I thought that I would give it a try since I was thinking of wearing it for my wedding in September. I found an old thread of yours and copied it down for a pattern. Out of curiosity why wouldn't you think that the pattern wouldn't work for a goat hair sporran?

Oh, I don't know if it will work or not. It might. But it was a rather large bag, and the hair will make it appear even larger. I've never built a hair sporran, though, so I'm not quite sure how it would need to be scaled in order to accommodate for the hair factor, while still being a pleasing shape and proportion to the cantle.
I haven't yet pinned down the final details of how I'll have mine built, but I'll be going for that shaggy, 'dirty white' mohair look that's reminiscent of the MacLeay portraits. This is one sporran that someone else posted, and I like the looks of it. But obviously, with a brass MOD cantle. I like the yellowing of the mohair, and might actually prefer it to look a bit dirtier than that one.

Here's a photo of me with a couple of MacLeay's portrait subjects (I was goofing around one day with photo software). I really like the one on the left, though it's a bit on the extreme side of the 'dirty' look. I haven't yet decided whether I'll want tassels on mine, but I'm sort of leaning that way.
