Salmon Leather
This is a pretty new substance on the market and claims to be very strong yet soft to the touch. Not very keen on fur myself, I was thinking that this might make a good choice for a dress sporran.

Has anyone had an opportunity to work with or even see the leather first hand?
What would you think of a Salmon Leather sporran?

It's interesting.
There is one main issue I see for it's use on the body of a sporran:
the individual panels are very small, so you're going to have at least one seam showing.
It would be nice if the website were a LITTLE bit more informative on available colours, seaming, and above all - price (which I can't seem to find anywhere on the main site, nor on any of the linked pages).
The shipping costs for the sample packs range from $12-40US... so you'd have to figure that into the equation as well when planning.
At $40 just for shipping, you're nearing the range of buying a stingray skin or several other nice exotics.
The material itself seems interesting though, and you'd nearly certainly be the only one wearing a bag of that type at any event.

Bingo! If you want to avoid fur, while also getting something more than just "leather", ray skin is an awesome material to think about. I've seen a couple sporrans made in this material, and they are knock-outs.
As for the salmon skins... if they were a bit larger and you could get a whole sporran facing out of a single skin, then I'd think it was an excelent material. But as it is, you'll have a seam showing and you have a supplier that is not up front about the price of materials, and whose shipping prices are quite high.
I'd put some serious thought into how much you want to be the only man around with a fish sporran.

I haven't used it, but I am curious. If it weren't so costly I'd order some just to see what it's like. It would be unique peice when finished, which is worth a few "cool points."
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

Ryan, I will have my redfish skin sporran, so Xman won't be the only one!

I think he should do a full mask salmon sporran.

Tandy has come out with some 'gator skins, and their cobra skins have the head on them...that'd be cool too.

True, but a salmon would be more original! C'mon you know you want to. Do you feel the peer pressure or should we try harder Xman?

I might be swayed by some mock up images ...
