Sgian Dubh - Out of this World
Weapons have never held my interest much. I don't own a sgian dubh, and didn't think I'd ever want one. Besides, I thought to myself, resin handles, glass stones, and plastic sheaths just don't hold appeal for me.
But after giving Steve "WhoDeySchenk" Schenk's "different" sgian dubh - a lovely gift from his lovely wife, I believe - a trial fitting down my sock one night, I am starting to have a change of heart about them. I liked how it looked and I liked how it felt.
But before I pulled the trigger on one just like it from Matt's gift shop or a similar one from Slanj, I thought I'd look across the internet to consider other possibilities. Well, I thought I found one:
This one caught my eye on the Google image search I used. It looks hand-crafted, and not in a style that turns up so often. Something about the blade and the fittings and the carving really appealed to me.
So I looked it up.
A traditional Scottish boot knife, with decidedly untraditional materials. This knife features an iron meteorite blade, meteorite bolster and endcap with rare pallasite and stoney meteorite inlaid in gold settings. Fully fileworked blade and nickel-silver fittings. The handle is carved ebony. The sheath features nickel-silver throat and tip over emu skin leather. An awsome and elegant combination.
Oh! How nice!
OH!
Price: $885

Price may even have gone down given that it isn't even this year's model.
That plus the state of the economy depressing discretionary spending.

I agree Rex. That is a refreshingly different look.

Here are a couple more. I'm putting them here so I can come back later and obsess about them. Accessory porn is what it is.

Actually, I like one of the other designs better - but I've never seen a sgian dubh/fruit knife combination before...

Yes, I love that part, too, but for me, it's probably the diamonds that get me all choked up.

Rex,
DWFII on this forum made me an exquisite sgian with ebony handle and warthog ivory, combined with a handmade elephant leather sheath. It is luxurious but much more affordable than those pictured here. I can personally vouch for the high quality and workmanship involved.
