Sgian Dubhs - Yet Another Kilt Related Addiction Blossoms
I probably have a problem with buying kilts - but there are others who own more than me - so its not too bad.
And one needs a variety of kilt hose colors so having a couple bazillion kilt hose isn't a big deal.
And, of course sporrans for different occasions and different types of jackets and vests for different occasions.
And every kilt needs its own related kilt pin.
But hey. I only have 3 sgian dubhs....well, four today. Greenfordranger told me about a Fire Service sgian dubh Taygrd had made...should have a Fire Service sgian dubh for my Firefighter's Memorial tartan kilt right? No question about that.
But what about my other tartans. Shouldn't the sgian dubh for each of them be related to the tartan just like the kilt pins. Thats why I bought the mini-KBar for the Leatherneck and U.S. Army tartan kilts.
The other two, the Navajo handle and the standard Celtic braid handle go for most anything...but really....need something with a custom look to match the tartan...clan sgian dubhs...Navy....RAF...et.al.
Jeez, sgian dubhs are even more expensive than kilt pins....but nice to get that shopper's high from a new branch of my kilt addiction.
Just got the Fire Service sgian dubh, haven't had a chance to post a pic. Maybe Taygrd can post his pic of it.

I have a request: when you get a new knife, please photograph it in some of the places you like to hike. I always enjoy your travelogues.

Aye. Got it at the post office at lunch then back to work. Dark by the time I got home...maybe this weekend. Hope Taygrd posts his pic though, professional quality pic of the sgian dubh.

Yes Riverkilt, I agree. Right now I've got four sgians in a range from casual to formal... I really like knives in general and this is just another excuse to acquire more!
Being a largely ceremonial knife, there are a lot of interesting sgian dubh designs out there. I especially like Drac's work though, because they are also functional.

Collection
I really love that mallacite knife, and as for Rab's work - stunning...I have a modest collection of sgiannan dhubh, 27 at the last count, the strange thing is, unless its black tie I don't wear a sgian, (I have one tattooed on my leg)
My favourites are 6 Wilkinson sword Sgiannan with the 'By Royal Appointment' stamp on them, and every blade has a different etching to go with the hilt except one, the pipers sgian.
They are all in immaculate condition - except the MD pipers sgian dubh with the studded hilt. The front face of the blade with the Wilkinson stamp is fortunately perfect, but the rear of the blade has with years of wear with no cleaning been badly marked.
I had a go at polishing it out, but have absolutely no knowledge of what I was doing, after reading some of the posts here about how to do it, I stopped afraid to go any further, so am stuck at the moment (any suggestions?) it is at least in check and the problem getting no worse. (BTW, Wilkinson no longer make sgiannan dhubh)
