Shooting socks?
Something new...well, new to me.
http://www.furfeatherandfin.com/prod...l#.UF6tyFYklZx
I found these while hunting for something else (a new flatcap...sorry Jock ) and am considering trying them out. They're in a decent price range, and I like the look of them, but wonder if they would be a good analog for regular hose, or if they are actually just kilt hose living under an assumed name.
I'm really liking the look of the sage, olive and ink colors.
Has anyone else used these socks, dealt with this company, or can lend any other intel?

I've not bought from this particular outfitter, but I do have a pair similar to the maroon ones on the site. I'm not sure I've worn them with a kilt, but can't think of any reason why they wouldn't be suitable. You mght also want to check out House of Bruar at Blair, Grahams on Castle Street in Inverness and Haggarts at Aberfeldy. On board here at XMarks, you might consider visiting the Gift Shop at the Tartans Museum and Scotweb; I think both of them carry much the same hunting sock.

I can't say anything about the company, as I make my own things, but the difference between shooting stockings and kilt hose is the length - kilt hose are shorter, the top of the fold over of shooting stockings should come right up to the knee.
In my dad's day there was a distinction between britches where the stocking went outside the cuff, and the posher sort where the stocking went underneath - presumably it was just so that the stockings could be changed more easily if they became wet or soiled.

I've been looking on and off at shooting socks. I don't see much of a difference between those and kilt hose. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that they have a common ancestor and are worn for likely similar reasons. I will probably end up with a pair sooner or later. They do rather look like the same thing.

Ive got a few pair of shooting socks for use with my kilts and my breeks. Breeks and plus 2's are the only pants I wear, reserving them for the coldest of winter times. They raise an eyebrow almost more than a kilt does. I found a nice set of socks in many colors including my favorite which are brown tweed with blue tops. Here is a link to their website and they also have an Ebay presence.

They look best with garter ties although Ive used my generic navy blue flashes with them.

Okay, so shooting socks are a bit longer. I guess a really tall guy might get away with using them in place of hose, but I'm not that tall. They're in the price range of decent everyday hose, so I'll stick with them for now.
What mainly caught my eye was the design on the cuff. I'll check out the STM and other places for something like that. I've mainly stuck to solid colors and have one set of cuffs knitted by a friend for more upscale events, though they could be worn any time.
Really, I'm not as concerned with cuff design as I am with colors. Bottle green, lovat blue, etc, are fine, but I want something a little different and don't want to pay through the nose. I had someone to knit hose if I supplied the yarn and a bottle of vino. Unfortunately, she got a cushy job in Vermont (the land of her dreams) and split. Hopefully, my wife makes friends with another avid knitter soon.
