Sporran Attachment System
After completing my kilt, I decided to make a sporran. I think it looks pretty good - passable anyway.
My question is this. Does it need to be worn using a belt or chain arrangement, around the waist, or can it be hung directly from the kilt belt using a couple of short leather straps?
I would prefer the latter because of the simplicity. Any thoughts or pictures?
Cheers

Diagram added to gallery...Looks a bit like a chastity belt in 2D.
I've been thinking thru this idea as well after reading of the ill effects of a chain but also wondering why I should need to wear a kilt belt and a sporan strap.
Buzz Kidder has the snap on loops that disturb the lines of the kilt and belt too much I think.
I wonder if you could apply a snap to the inside surface of the kilt belt that would accept a leather thong with a snap on one end and a D-ring, trigger clip or some other means of attachment on the other that would be very subtle.
The draw back I'm seeing is the snap on the belt could rub the waistband of the kilt and the weight of the sporran may tend to pull the belt south causing you to be constantly fiddeling with the belt position.
My ramblings may not clearly explain the idea so I scribbled out a diagram for clarity in my gallery.

Thanks Cavscout. You post brings up something I had not thought of. The weight of the sporran could pull the kilt belt down.
Now, if the sporran isn't too heavy, I'm wondering about the feasability of using some velcro (about the size of a postage stamp) on the kilt side of the kilt belt that would hold the straps of the sporran. The pressure of the body against the kilt belt would provide quite a bit of holding power. It would also be very simple and discreet. Almost invisible.
Any other ideas out there?
Cheers

I see what you mean. Thanks Freelander. Wouldn't that make the sporran ride quite high? It certainly is a tidy solution!
I just took a look at another thread (Buzz Kidder Sporrans) and I see exactly what I'm looking for. Seems Mac Newsome has them for sale.

Rick...
I can only suggest that although alternate schemes have been tried before (although admittedly not by me), most men seem to choose either the traditional leather strap or strap and chain. Unlike some in the group, I've never had a problem with the chain damaging the kilt. Also, I think they look good.
Personally, I think the weight of the sporran on the belt or the front of the kilt is not a good idea and wouldn't want that. The traditional approach also allows the sporran some freedom to move with body. Perhaps the solution is to give your scheme a try and see if you like it. Let us know how you make out with it.
cheers,

Blu, it is not 100% certain that you will damage your kilt by wearing a sporran chain, but the possibility is there and, when it happens, boy do you regret it I have heard of and seen examples of terrible damage to the aprons of expensive kilts, and I simply will not risk it.
Also, the damage is hardly likely to occur overnight! It might take some years to manifest itself. On the other hand though .......... just one dodgy link in the chain........!!

Thanks Blu. In the interest of Expediency, Time, and Tradition, I decided to go with a leather strap around the waist.
It is riveted directly to the beck of the sporran in such a way as to allow the straps to pivot. Then I used a conway buckle (no moving parts) and arranged the strap lengths such that it buckles at my right hip. Nothing to dig into my back when I'm sitting down.
It looks traditional, and there is no chain to snag the wool.
Making a sporran is not that hard, but for really good quality and craftsmanship, I think I would seriously consider one of Freelander Sporrano's works of art next time. Especially at the price he is asking.
Cheers All
