Sporran shopping.
I'm shopping for something to go with my kilt. I know, how odd right? Don't anyone faint from the shock.
So anyway, I'd like some opinions from the only group I'd trust with such questions.
I was looking on Irishkilts.net for an Irish family crest sporran (I can't seem to find them anywhere else) and I ran across some with a pewter family crest, but I'm not sure I like the sporran.

Also I'm not sure if the pewter crest seems a bit too flashy. (The one in the picture happens to be the Murphy crest by the way)
There's another one there without the crest that I like better than the first sporran. It's a bit more plain and unobtrusive.

Not sure I like the tassles though.
Then there's Bear's Irish crest sporran. Granted it's not a family crest, but who can fault the harp?

I can't find anything I don't like about it, but it is a little more expensive than the other two. Beleive me, price is an issue and every penny counts. I am one poor, broke, beggar of an old sod. (That's beggar, not bugger)
So have at it lads. Cry havoc and let fly the opinions!

Murphy, you'd definately be getting a far better quality sporran from Bears siteIrishkilts.net and Scottishkilts.net sell mass produced sporrans that are a bit short on room and awkward to use. I have one of their leather ones and once I have my wallet, change purse and keys in it there's no room for my smokes or anything else. Get the one from Bear. You'll be happier with it.

My vote would go to the sporran on bears site. Having said that the second sporran you have chosen is almost the same as I have myself. One of the reasons I have made my own sporran is that shop purchased sporrans often don't open so wide and therfore are a little difficult to use sometimes.I can't speak about the sporran on Bears site It looks first class.
Have a look here before you make your mind up

I think these are fab
All the best whichever you choose Murphy

Aaron,
One thing that I have noticed is that once you become kilted, sporrans are yet another form of want......ur excuse me needed accesories.
I am also looking at many of the sporrans offered and have an eye on Bear's Irish Crest, have yet to decide but I am finding sporrans just as full of decision making as kilts.
Do tell us what you decide, I for one will be wanting to know.

Ah, yes, "sticker shock". This was the primary reason I started making my own stuff. After a good look at a nicely made sporran at the MD Rennfest (thanks Dave), I devised a pattern for a 'medieval' sporran that got rave reviews. I even got an order for one when I wore it the first time!

check out museum replicas, they have three or for sporrans that are reasonably priced and they are roomy. I can fit an 8 oz flask, my truck keys, pen, chapstick, a thin tri-fold wallet or up to 40 bills of various denominations without to much trouble, plus they come with a belt so Hamish won't be after ya

Today, Rudi of Celtic Empire dropped of four 2.25" belts and three new sporrans for me to look at and see if I want to stock them.
I'll take some pics tomorrow, post them, and ask for your opinions.
