    Which sporran style, can't decide

I'm having a sporran made for my son's wedding next year, to go with his new kilt. I'm leaning towards a cantled sporran with a plain leather bag. But what style to choose? Options are brass or silver plate with a brown or black bag.

I have a brass cantle sporran (and an original mid-18th century bronze one) which my boy with one day inherit so the idea of a silver one, perhaps with a black bag is an interesting possibility. I guess if I went for that option then we could swap between ourselves depending on the occasion although I love my current one and happy to wear it on any and every occasion.

    What to do. Thoughts?

I like the idea of him having one different from yours...for the reasons you already suggest.

Unless he has a strong desire one way or the other wrt leather color and/or cantle, I would go black with silver for him.

I would personally love a nice brown leather sporran, but still only have black. It seems more "universal" to me to use black leather. I realize that in highland dress, either is acceptable, but to my eye there is a difference and when those differences present, black/silver wins out the day (to me).

    Just my 2cents.

Yes, but that's the dilemma. There can only be one!

This is my Artificer masterpiece. I post this here because I commissioned this sporran for my daughter's wedding two years ago. It was a wonderful collaborative experience from the initial concept through every aspect of the design and execution of each component part. It was inspired by the Arts Nouveau Style Idle Hours Trophy that was presented to my Grandfather in 1926.

As it happens, the sporran and the trophy are roughly the same size. Scott, The Artificer took his inspiration from the original designer, Otto Heintz and the cantle also uses Silver laid over Bronze in the fluid Arts & Crafts Style of the Glasgow School of Art in the early part of the 20th century.

The process was a complete joy from start to finish and it was an excellent way to include my Grandfather in the wedding of my daughter in a very special and completely unique way.

So, I wish you much joy and the very best of luck with your own very special sporran project.

What's the tartan of the kilt? I like some contrast when getting done up. So if it's a bright or light colored tartan, I'd choose black with silver. If a more muted or dark colored, brown with brass.
