this is the sporran that Tom made
A while back I started a thread asking to trade a pair of hose for a sporran. I wanted a brown leather sporran that would be at home at a Games, a kilt night, a funeral or wherever I needed a not-black sporran. Tom (A_Hay!) responded that he'd be willing to make such a trade, and the negotiations began. I sent him a pic of a Celtic cross necklace that I made and have worn for 10 years or so, which I wanted carved into the flap.

He told me that he could produce an antique look, which is what I wanted,
and he started to work. He needed a few measurements, which I supplied, and what he came up with is this:

The cross is carved into the leather, just like the linoleum prints we used to do in art class. He could have carved away the "body" of the cross, (the part between the lines) but I asked him to do it the way you see it here.
Here's the back:

He had a short strap with D-rings inserted here, which I removed and replaced with a belt. I don't like the belt, but it was the best I could come up with.
And for Ron, here's a ruler shot:

It opens to a little over 2 X 6 inches wide, which is plenty big enough to put my "pocket junk" into. I asked for a cell phone pocket inside the sporran, but I gave Tom the wrong measurememts and so the pocket is too small for a cell phone but will hold a driver's license and more credit cards than I need to have.
I'm very happy with this sporran, and have received many positive comments from others about it. I highly recommend Tom's work, and would be glad to have another sporran from him, when the need arises.
He also made a belt pouch for my wife (which I don't have a pic of), which is beautiful and holds all the paraphernalia that she needs to carry.
If you have a sporran made, here's a hint for measuring your phone. Lay it flat and, using a cloth tape measure, measure up the end, down the length, and down the other end, then add about 1/2 inch. this will give you the length and thickness of your phone, which Tom will then use to make the pocket inside the sporran.
Tom was a pleasure to work with, and finished the sporran WAY before I finished his red and yellow hose, which he airmailed me from Germany. His work speaks for itself, and this sporran is, next to the kilt, my favorite itme in my kit.
Thanks again, Tom.

That is one grand looking sporran. I'm still looking for one in brown too. More of the burnt amber color I think that's what it's called.

What a great sporran! The lines of the curve in the top flap and body are uniform yet elegant expressions of line. Your design idea for the Celtic cross was excellent, as was his execution. Congratulations!
