    Sweet little eBay kilt pin

The ring is 1 1/2" in diameter, and is hallmarked silver. The pin rotates on the ring. I don't know what it's original purpose was, but it's very "De Stijl" meets Highland wear. And since I'm a design geek, it was a true steal. ESPECIALLY if it's actually silver (which is incidental to me compared to the design).
The actual pin is meant to rest between the two silver balls, but this is the best shot of the piece and depicts the pin's 'rotation'.

Since my X-Marks cap badge broke (and was magnetized, which is another DIY feature I'm working on) I've been looking for another kilt pin for fancier affairs.

    This'll do for me.

Wasn't this type of pin used to pin the two ends of the great kilt at the shoulder? I have a simular hand-forged item and that is its purpose.

That's what drew me to it (along with it's geometric style). It's size, as I understand it, is tiny compared to anything used on the shoulder... It's only 1.5" across. At best 1/2 the size of a brooch/pin for a great kilt.

LOL I was looking at that one myself bud, I knew someone here would likely to get it. There is also a very nice antique brown sporran with brass cantle that I'm sure will go to an X-Marker.

If that was the MOD brass cantle sporran that just went for US310.00 on ebay it was owned by a Xmarks member (membership revoked) who posted pics of it in a thread in September

    Kilt Pin

If the pin rotates round the ring, and the pin passes between the two metal balls on the ends of the ring, then I suspect this is a penannular. This is the old fashioned way of securing the device to the cloth.

It's funny, really. I wonder how many of these items we end up bidding against each other on?

You've got it exactly right, but I thought a penannular was an open ring.

If you're at all concerned about whether or not it can (or should) be used as a kilt pin, just look at pg. 61 of the revised edition of Scottish Tartans and Highland Dress - you'll see an illustration of a similar pin with all of the other kilt pins.
