Tartan Sporrans
With my recent kilt purchase from Skye highland outfitters, Josh sent me piece of the left over tartan that was not used. It is not much, but I have already started to use it. Today, I made some tartan flashes out of it (will show those later.) I still have some left to use. I was wondering about some of your thoughts on putting tartan on sporrans similar to this:

Would you put tartan on your sporran? If you have any pictures of a tartan sporran, I would love to see some!

I've seen them done before and was never really thrilled with the result. Turpin does a SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT take on it which appeals to me a little (he does the flap in tartan on the bias), but I still don't like the overall effect on the whole. I like that a well made sporran stands OUT against the tartan background as it's own piece of art.
Tartan sporrans also limit the # of kilts you can wear the sporran with (assuming you want the 'tartan sporran' to match the kilt) .

Yeah...a bit much IMHO. If you want to get the Clark thing going on....some nice diced hose would look even better

Brice,
Here is a link to Turpin's website showing the tartan sporran flaps: http://www.thorfinnsporrans.com/3.html
I don't care for diced hose, but one of these days I am going to get a pair of tartan-topped hose from Josh at SHO (Skye Highland Outfitters).

No. I'm hard pressed to find any example of a tartan sporran that existed prior to a couple years ago, and think that a simple, quality leather sporran looks much better.

The nice thing about Turpin's snapflaps is you can have multiple flaps for the same sporran including plain leather, contrasting leather, fur or tartan.

Though I agree with much of what has been said and would steer clear in general, I thought occurred to me. Wearing such a sporran with a solid colored kilt (such as my black Stillwater) would give a Scottish reference to the uninformed. Just a thought. With a tartan kilt I would run screaming from a tartan sporran.

It's been a long strange ride so far and I'm not even halfway home yet.

Stick with a nice brown leather sporran for daywear, and a silver-mounted fur sporran for evening dress and you won't go wrong.
There's a thought...why don't you make your wife a sporran style purse with the leftover tartan?
