Which of these sporrans do YOU prefer?
I recently purchased a Highland attire package that included a kilt, tweed jacket, sporran, kilt pin and bonnet. I really only wanted the jacket but it was an all or nothing deal, so I'm hoping to sell off some of the other items so that the jacket comes out to a fair price.
The dress sporran that came with the set was very similar to the one I already have. The cantles are virtually identical. The new one is whiter and the hair is longer. It still feels course like seal and is not rabbit but it doesn't have the same sheen as my dark seal sporran. Is anyone familiar with this kind of pelt?
I don't need two so similar and will keep one. Which should I keep? Which do you prefer? Silver fur or cream fur?

Ah Nathan, could it be? That white one sure does look like the fur of the Arctic Acrylabeast.

Hi Nathan,
The sporrans seem very similar, but actually, both belong to different colour palettes.
Are you familiar with the phrases cool and warm tones? These buzz words were a big part of the fashion industry about 20 years ago. However, the principles are solid and have stood the test of time. (This goes further into dividing skin tones into 'seasons', but this is the underlying principle)
Here's a mini crash course:
Everyone has an underlying skin tone which is either warm or cool. Once you know which type of skin you have, you will be able to select the colours which will look the best on you.
You can wear the other palette; if everything is in the same palette, you will look fine.
Quite often the easiest way to tell which type you have is to check out the colour of metal against your skin. Do you look better with yellow gold or white gold. Check your jewellery. Or take a friend with a good eye for colour to a sewing store and ask to see lamé cloth which is gold & silver. Drape it around your face, covering all other colour. One will look fabulous and one won't look as good.
Gold has a blue undertone -> Cool Palette
Silver has a yellow undertone -> Warm Palette
Every colour has the potential to have cool and warm tones influencing it, depending on what it is mixed with.
For example, there are both cool reds and warm reds:
The cool reds have an underlying blue tone in them - maroon, claret, burgundy etc. - leaning toward the purple side of red.
The warm reds have an underlying yellow tone in them - brick red, tomato, salsa etc. - leaning toward the orange side of red.
If you put one of each side by side, they usually clash or 'swear' at each other! burgundy and brick red look terrible together
Check out your closet. You will have snow white shirts and cream shirts. They are considered neutrals and often are used interchangeably, but the white is cool and the cream is warm. Which one looks best on you? Using the metallics above help you focus more clearly on what is best for you.
The silvery grey sporran will go very well with any tartan with a cool tone - anything with a blue tone to it. Any tartan that you would wear black accessories with would look great with this one.
The cream sporran is ideal for any tartan with a warm tone - anything with a yellow tone to it. Any tartan that you would wear with brown accessories with would look great with this one. Yes, it has silver on it, but silver is also a neutral which is ok when mixed with warm in small quantities.
Both black and brown are often called neutrals but even neutrals have either a cool or a warm palette - black is cool and brown is warm.
All colours have these two gradients to them - even grey.
Play with them - I have seen you wearing both palettes so you have a very tough decision to make if you need to give one up.
Try hanging each sporran in front of your various kilts with these tones in mind, I think you will probably acquire an new appreciation for the subtleties of the various colours in your kilts and what will bring a cohesive feeling to your outfits.
I have seen many outfits, on others, which just didn't look quite right. When I analyzed them, I realized that the two palettes had been mixed - it is rare for cool and warm palettes to be together without visual tension. Sometimes a little visual tension is ok.
There is an acceptable amount of visual tension with the cream sporran - it has silver on it, but it is a small amount and doesn't clash too much with the cream.
For example: I love the Maple Leaf tartan, it looks ok with black accessories and would look ok with the silvery grey sporran.
But it truly sings with brown accessories and it would look amazing with the cream sporran.
I can't remember if you have a Maple Leaf tartan, but that would be a good place to start training your eye if you do.
Have fun with your sporrans, Nathan. You will figure out what will give you the best bang for your buck.
Cheers!
Sorry Folks, but everything must have crashed when I tried to post this - everything was gone & I had to redo this - I had started doing my posts on Notepad because this happened to me before. Since I hadn't erased the first page, I had something to start with. What should have taken 2 mins ended up taking 20.

Reason: to add reason for the different palettes & emboldening -> total redo after loosing it

Now that's a difficult decision . What about keeping both of them ... and selling something else to recoup the cost . One can never have too many sporrans .

Not the Arctic Acrylabeast this time...

In fact, everything about the sporran is very high quality including the silver plated cantle and the gorgeous maroon leather on the back.

Another vote for the white here, so long as it goes with your kilts.
I think you may be right in thinking it's juvenile seal.
