Tuxedo Shirts
I'm in the market for a tuxedo shirt to wear with a PC jacket and waistcoat. I'm not sure that I really have a preference in style, and there seem to be quite a number of variations. What preferences do the rabble have?
Winged or lay-down collar?
Pleated or plain? If pleated, 5 pleats or 10?
Button cuffs or cuff links?
Other suggestions?
I can say that I am NOT a fan of the Mandarin collar or ruffles!
Thanks in advance...

Mine has a fold down collar and many small pleats on the front. It also has both regular buttons as well as holes for studs and cuff links. I like having the option
- Justitia et fortitudo invincibilia sunt
- An t'arm breac dearg

With a waistcoat, the number of pleats might not matter. Only the pleats closest to the center placket will show. I prefer French cuffs, but it would depend on how the sleeve of your PC is cut. Is the sleeve full enough to accommodate the extra fabric in a French cuff? If the cuff catches on the inside of the sleeve, go with button cuffs.
You forgot to consider whether the shirt requires studs or not. Forget plackets with exposed buttons, but if you don't like studs, some shirts are made with a flap of fabric that covers the placket and hides the buttons. Often those shirts feature an inset fabric detail other than pleats, and the flap matches the fabric panels on either side of the placket.

In my opinion, simple is best. Full collar, no frills, and classic french cuffs. The full collar will give you a good look whether you decide to go with a bow tie or neck tie. I prefer the lack of pleats for the multipurpose reason as well. Plain fronts are going to give the option of cummerbund, vest, or waistcoat without making every look to busy. Plus, I on the occasion that you want or have to take you jacket off, I think the pleats look at little funny bc they usually only cover the area in the middle. That's just my two cents.

I'm personally a fan of plain marcella front (no pleats, frills), turn down collar, and, in a departure from recommendations, plain front rather than bib front. French cuffs, please.
A very decent guide is found HERE.
Whatever shirt you choose, please buy a self-tie bow tie and not a pre-tied thingy.

The shirt is truly a personal preference issue. Many choices, all of which are perfectly acceptable. I am in strong agreement with Artificer on the bow tie…..please buy a self-tie and not a pre-tied. For me, the pre-tied is a fate worse than white kilt hose (or flat caps).

The marcella is an interesting choice, and one that I was not familiar with. I am quickly growing attached to it, and will have to try to find one to see up close.
I would never own a pre-ties or clip-on tie of any kind.

Yes, but that brings up questions about which type of cufflinks one should wear.
Should one wear only the double sided cufflinks with the kissing cuffs?
Or could one wear a single sided cufflink with the edges of the cuffs overlapping?
I know nothing!
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
