Unexpected Appreciation for Lewis Kilt Hose
Most know I'm a Lewis Kilt Hose junkie. Have two pair of each of a bazillion colors.
But they don't make khaki....and I needed to wear khaki kilt hose with my turnout today. So, wore regular $25 khaki kilt hose. No clue where from....but dang - just no comparison to what I'm used to with Lewis Kilt Hose....much thinner, not shaped as well...looser on the leg. Felt it all while hiking.
So, I'm doomed to buy two pair of khaki Lewis Kilt Hose if they ever make them in khaki...

Will DownUnder's tea dye trick work on the 50% acrylic hose? If so, just get two pair of the Ecru and turn them khaki.

I minored in Clothing and Textiles. My understanding is that synthetic fibers won't absorb dye. Might coat it for a while, but can't absorb it.
Gotta be a reason Lewis doesn't make up their hose in one of the most popular colors. Trust their judgement and suffer with the cheaper khaki hose until they choose to offer them.

Won't the Bison work for you? Or are you going specifically for a military look?

I have the bison - two pair. They are darker than what I know as Khaki....not as "neutral" a color - a definate brown.

I was about to order a pair of the discontinued Ecru and try the coffee as dye trick-- going for a lightish oatmeal to light brown sugar type final color, much light than the dark natural or bison.

Just to clarify, the Lewis hose are not being discontinued in the Ecru color, but we do have some stock of the fully-fashioned version of the Lewis hose, which ARE being discontinued, in Ecru (along with other colors). Those are listed on sale here:

We will be stocking another, similar style, of fully fashioned hose for those with larger calves, also from House of Cheviot.

Ahh yes, the "wide calf" variant is the one that is changing.
50-50 wool-acrylic, I thought I read wool content of 70% and up works better for those dyeing at home.
I agree with Riverkilt that a lightish brown darker than Ecru but lighter than bison and dark natural is a potentially useful acqusition to my wardrobe. I would buy a pair.
There is some kind of speckled effect I have seen in some sweaters that I wouldn't mind seeing. Have you ever seen a sweater made of yarn the color of say maple wood, but with flecks of walnut wood darker brown in the actual yarn fiber? Then all knit together it comes out rather more towards rustic/ homespun and rather less towards perfectly evenly polka-dotted?
Sort of like the hatchwork cuff in the royal cuff line on STM, but a little more subtle. Actually, a little more subtle than the brightly lit bit on the left side of the image, and a lot more subtle than the properly lit part of the image to the right.

Recently got my first pair of their kilt hose and must say even though I've only warn them twice so far I can certainly appreciate why they came so highly recommended on this site. Great quality and comfortable.
