Watch Chain: What's new is old again.

In an earlier message, Panache said:

I noticed that Target had a clearance on some of their vests.

I picked up a dark brown corduroy one with an olive satin back for under $5.

Obviously Nick and pdcorlis have been an influence

It has been a while since I wore my bow tie so please excuse me if it is a bit askew.

Notice how I am wearing my pocket watch and its chain.
Today I went shopping in the back of one of the drawers of my jewelry chest and found a pocket watch I thought would look nice with the corduroy jacket and vest I decided to wear to the office today, but I didn't have a clue as to how to wear it properly.

(My ex bought a contemporary pocket watch for me once, because I don't wear wristwatches. I've never had much luck wearing them - they stop within days - so he thought a pocket watch would have a better chance. ... It didn't.)

I searched the internet. I was in a hurry to leave for work, and it didn't turn up anything useful, so I searched XMTS, and it turned up Jamie's post. That's not how I wanted to wear a watch chain, so I searched the internet again with different terms.

    And then this popped up.

    Just thought I'd share.

    Regards,
    Rex.

I'm sure it has a breast pocket, but where did Pinache get the suit and homburg? and is it the same watch?

Hmmm, the waistcoats that go with my two kilt jackets both have breast pockets.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I went through a pocket watch phase. At one time had eleven working all mechanical watches, even a couple of "valuable" ones. I am now down to two.

I am still trying to find a waistcoat that fits properly.

I may have to make one.

Yes, they often do, but your watch is usually worn in the lower right pocket. Let's see now, how does that go: spectacles in the top left, wallet in the top right, watch in the lower right, hmmmm I must be getting old, can't recall what's in the lower left.

Well, I don't wear spectacles. Perhaps I should get some little round style spectacles just so I can keep them there...

    Thumbs up

    Dear friends,

My watch chain is a bit special.

It's over 150 years old, silver.

The general French name for this style of watch chain is une châtelaine.

In this case it is une châtelaine et sa breloque.

This is how it is worn:

    Best,

I saw that chain in another thread that came up in that search, Robert, and of course I covet it. I'm happy to see it in use here. That's pretty much how I ended up wearing mine yesterday, if a comparison were possible.

    Regards,
    Rex.

Our only family heirloom is my great-grandfather's gold watch with chain. It's incribed inside from 1894 with references to his works in "religion, temperance and agriculture"! He was factor of the Farraline estate in Stratherrick until he died in 1915.

My eldest son will get it from me when he's 21 next July.

Now all I have to do is think of heirlooms for my two daughters (both 18) and youngest son?!

    Slainte
