What to do with 5 yards?

I recently ordered my fourth (and probably final) "tank." As the tartan was a custom weave, I decided to invest in an additional 5 yards of fabric for accessories.

I thought of a plaid, but they aren't worth the hassle generally.

I thought of a couple of bias-cut waistcoats; one for kilt wear, and a longer one for wear with a suit. I haven't often seen that done, but I think it would present a dashing look.

As yet, I remain undecided. Suggestions are welcome!

So, what would you do with 5 yards of single width tartan which matches a good kilt?

Don't know if there is a "Mrs. Burke" around the house, but were it me, I would have a matching skirt and/or scarf made for my wife. Or perhaps a dress vest she could wear over a long black skirt with white blouse. But that's just me...

If there is no "better half," I think your ideas concerning vests for yourself would be the smart investment. (And sharp looking to boot.)

With 5 yards, you should be able to have a jacket made, or a half-plaid, or upholster a favorite chair, or another kilt.

    not just vests...

A lady's bustier made from tartan is attractive, too, and doesn't use a lot of fabric. Depending on the weight of your tartan, it might be just the thing for your better half to wear to formal events. We don't all need to be with ladies in high necked blouses and floor length skirts.

One tremendous advantage of the bustier is that it can be dressy over a skirt of whatever length, or it can be quite fetching over a pair of trousers. And, because it is worn on the top half of the body, it doesn't look like an adapted / adopted kilt.

Here are a couple of variations: http://www.clangatherings.com/

But if you are not lucky enough to spend time with a bustier-wearing type, at least make certain the vest is lined so that wearing it without a blouse underneath might be an option.

    derailing...

If you are wondering what to do with your MONEY, you may want to consider THIS Anderson Ladies' silk jacket. I recognize your avatar is the Citadel tartan, but Anderson uses similar colors...

I would get one tartan waistcoat for formal kilt wear but a neck tie for wear with a suit. If there is enough material, a tartan evening doublet would be awesome!

If you have a partner willing to wear tartan, a sash is always nice.
