What kind of hat to wear
I have just recently purchased a kilt for my renaissance wear. I'm a little confused on what type of hat to wear. I also want to wear my kilt outside of the Faire to get maximum use out of my purchase. I play a pirate at the Faire so with that in mind...
What kind of hat should I get to wear at the Faire?
What kind of hat do you wear while wearing your kilt on a casual day?
Any help would be appreciated.

A balmoral, unless I'm wearing an eye patch, prosthetic hook, and inflatable parrot.

My first instinct would be a simple workmans hat that resembles a beanie made of something like blue ticking.. An interesting source would be watching the black pearl movies( pirates of the carribean) and see what they wear. Not all pirates were captains most were just simple seamen. I guess it all depends on the role you will be playing.

A kilted pirate? Perhaps a tartan bandana or headsquare tied on your head.

When given a choice, most people will choose.

How about a tartan tricorn? Just kidding, a balmoral or blue bonnet might be good.

Here is my take. What you choose for the Ren Faire may not work for daily wear.
Ren Faire = #1 = a silk scarf , #2 = a LARGE TOS

Daily wear, what ever you like. See Jamie's various looks etc.

I'd look at the hats these folks offer:

I'm thinking about getting their version of the balmoral.

Jack you are a handsom rascsal! They do offer quite a large selection of hats, many different varitys to choose from.
My self I love the Red Tam I wear from my Clan Claus Kilt Kit. I make it go with just about everything. With my Black Watch Kilt I wear a Knitted Black Tam. Of course both sport my Lion Rampant Family Crest.

Puffer offers a couple of good options.
Maybe you would like an older style blue bonnet, something like this. It's Mac Newsome wearing a period outfit with blue bonnet:

Go here to see some closeup examples of the bonnets. Scroll to the bottom where the Historic Styles section begins.

For regular wear, stick with a balmoral.
