What Not to Wear Scottish Addition - PC Jacket / Ruche Tie
I randomly came across this recent image of a Scottish wedding that was held at Culcreuch Castle, Stirlingshire. My comment is directed towards the two gentleman to the left of the groom. I apologize if you recognize yourself, but I think the ruche tie and PC jacket combo look terrible. The tie's just splayed out. I think that the jacket could be accessorized with a "standard" tie if you wanted to be adventurous, but I'd say the ruche with its extra-wide base is an aesthetic no-no. It looks as though they're wearing Reb Lobster bibs. Thoughts?

I don't think it's so much the PC jacket. To me it's the three-button waistcoat. The tie is too short for a waistcoat that buttons so low. It might work better with the 5-button waistcoat that buttons higher so you can tuck the tie inside it better. My $0.02

I am on your wave length regarding the ruche tie KB. If they "must" be worn, then I suggest a 5/6 button high lapeled waistcoat. No long tie should be worn with a 3 button formal waistcoat

Yes, if the ruche is worn with the PC jacket, a 5/6 button waistcoat would remedy the awkward tie splay. Good call.

Alas, it's the en vogue look that's being pushed by kilt hire shops all over the world along with the exaggerated collars. You and I may not like the trend too much, but since it's being pushed hard by the fashion industry and outfitters, I don't think I'd go so far as calling it a faux pas.

I feel bad for wedding parties that are kitted out in ways that are traditionally frowned upon after they put their faith in the hands of would be experts. The pictures last forever...

P.S., excuse my error in the title name - "edition", not "addition." I have a toddler at home and I am perpetually running on little sleep.

I think the main problem with those ties is the color. A more subdued color would not stand out and attract the eye nearly as much. Why wear a ruche tie at all if it is going to be covered up by a 5 button vest.

I think the main "draw" of the ruche is the knot, and not so much the body of the tie; thus, I think a 5 button vest is just fine. They look terrible in this pic, unfortunately.

I think ruche ties need to be in the "what not to wear" category, period.
