    What's On Your Bonnet?

Hello,I was wondering what you guys put on your bonnets(I.E. Balmorals,Glengarries, etc.)?If you guys put hackles, little, feathers, big feathers(for the armigers and chiefs),hackles, cockaded, flowers, and whatever else into your chosen hat wear when you are kilted? If anyone has a tuft of bear fur or a deer tail in their bonnet,I would like to see a picture of it especially.

    Thank-you and stand sure,

    Ethan Walling

On my band Glengarry, I have a black ribbon cockade, upon which I have a faux-Clan Scott clansman's badge (it was sold as a Clan Scott badge, but it's not the 'authorized' version). Occasionally, I'll put my Eagle Scout pin (not the medal, but a small Eagle lapel pin with a clutch back) or the pin of the National Eagle Scout Association (aka NESA) on the hat, just forward of the clan badge. A lot depends on how long I'll be wearing my headgear, whether I'll be taking it off, etc.

On my personal Balmoral, I changed out the standard black cockade for one in the Clan Scott chief's livery colors (gold and blue), to which I have pinned the 'authorized' Clan Scott clansman's badge. I'll occasionally pin my Eagle Scout or NESA pin to this as well, but I don't get to wear this hat as often, and the same dependencies apply (where, how long, will I be taking it off, etc.).

When plans are made to meet up with XMarkers at a venue, I'll put the XMarks plant badge (a dandelion) behind the clan badge as an identifier.

No feathers, hackles, or anything else.

Balmoral #1: I have a homemade cockade in MacLean hunting tartan, usually bedecked with matching clan badge.

Balmoral #2: Currently home to a clan badge, but often sees a thistle badge. However, I am considering a sprig of holly for future events, given the clan MacLean association with said plant.

Band glengarry: First off, it has the original black cockade. There's supposed to be a gaudy band-supplied fake cairngorm badge on it. I took it off and replaced it with a Marine Corps cap badge. Much better.

I wear the XMarks capbadge with a Dandelion on my Balmoral. They are both sewn in so I don't accidentally loose one or the other.

All you need is a white, black or blue cockade and a cap badge. Leave the hackles, feathers and animal skins to actors playing indians.

If your really feeling confident try your clans plant badge or, for Jacobite followers, a white ribbon bow.

I wear a Macpherson clansman's badge in silver and sometimes a sprig of white heather or boxwood, which are both the plant badges of the Clan Macpherson.

    Cheers,

My bonnet had no cockade, so I put a square of my clan tartan on my balmoral (as was our regimental practice) and I added my clan badge. If I had access to purple heather, I'd put that behind my badge as well. No need for feathers and plumes etc...

I just finished making my first bonnet. I made a simple cockade following the directions in "So You're Going To Wear the Kilt". No clan badge pin yet.

On Balmoral (red) I have the XMarks Cap Badge with the Dandelion pinned in with it.
On Glengarry (black) I have the Clan MacMillan Cap Badge with a sprig of holly (silk & plastic) pinned in with it.
On Balmoral (black) I don't have anything, yet...

My balmoral has a little round red ball on top of it; don't know where it came from but, I like it. (Toorie-oorie-ay)

But seriously, I have an indigo balmoral with a black ribbon cockade upon which I have pinned a pewter 'Fraser of Lovat' badge. I have placed a fresh picked dandelion in it a couple of times, but they wilt quickly and the stems bleed a milky sap that is sticky. Recently purchased one of the silk dandelions from our XMTS store.

I've also placed a strawberry leaf (Fraser clan, plant badge) above the badge but, they wilt too so, I'm looking for an artificial version of that as well.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle.
