When and where to use Flashes
Not wanting to Hijack an earlier thread I was wondering about the use of Flahes. I only have the Moderen Gunn flashes I received with my kilt.
Question.
Are plain Flashes choosen in the same way as a tie for the kilt. You choose a plain colour from your kilt
Question.
When do you use Tartan and when are plain best
Question.
Whithout Flashes when
I know there aren't really any hard and fast rules........are there

I try to match my flashes to a colour in my kilt; for instance, there is a lot of "ancient red" (almost orange) in my Cumming/Buchan hunting ancient kilt, so orange or rust-coloured flashes look good with the tartan.
I really don't think there is a proscribed time to wear tartan flashes; I think it's more up to the individual and his "style" that day.
Cheers !

My two tartan kilts are both Modern Douglas and I wear gren hose to match the kilts but I wear red flashes for a spot of color and it really looks nice, the red also matches the red Rampant Lion on my dress up cream hose.

I try to match my flashes with a color within my kilt as an accent to the kilt similar to matching a tie, and that I try to match to the flashes, but tie wearing is extremely rare.
I am noticing that I wear flashes when I am a formal or semiformal situation, so most of the time I am not wearing flashes.

After 50+ years of kilt wearing, my 'flashing' seems to follow a pattern - not rules.
Basically, tartan flashes are a fairly modern innovation and have crept into the scene over the past twenty years or so - as really has the wide range of plain coloured flashes now available. Back in the 1950's, the only flashes one could find were either red or green - that was it!
I generally wear Tartan flashes when dressing formally (and occasionally, when I do not have suitable plain ones).
Plain coloured flashes are best matched with the base-colour of the kilt and, yes, if plain flashes and plain tie match, you will look really good.
When dressing casually, with my kilt hose worn normally (ie: pulled up) I seldom wear flashes - just elastic garters under the fold over tops. If I do, then they will be of a plain colour, perhaps to tone with my shirt or top rather than the kilt. Of course, flashes are totally unnecessary and pointless if the hose is rolled down!
I hope this helps.

Brilliant, Ham.! You've summed up the "skinny" on Flashes quite nicely!
Cheers, !

I agree too, I only wear flashes for the more formal occasions.
They seem unnecessary for casual wear IMHO
