    Whitetail Deer Antler Sgian Dubh

    Hello gang,

So, now that I've ordered my first kilt, I'm looking to put together the rest of the outfit. I've actually been looking at this sgian dubh for some time now and really quite like it:

I'm trying to put together sort of a rustic look. I know this sgian dubh is a bit quirky, but hey. In any case, since I'd also like to have as many bits that are representative of my place of origin, I was wondering if anyone knew of, or is, a maker of custom sgians dubh, who could make this exact type, but with whitetail deer antler as opposed to roe staghorn. Thanks!

You could try Drac or Taygrd, both members of this forum. I have a sgian dubh by Taygrd, which you can see in photo I just posted in your other thread. I have also seen Dracs work on this forum and it also looks mighty fine.

Might as well just put the Taygrd one here too

    Hermes.

Do you have Roe deer in the USA? I am not sure that you do, but I could be wrong. Anyway just so you know, in the UK a male roe deer is known as a "buck" and the female is known as a "doe". The male red deer is known as a "stag" and the female is known as a "hind".

Howard Clark, or, Rab Gordon, members here, might be worth asking, although I have not seen any of their superb work with antler handles, but you never know.

Jock, I could be wrong, but I believe there might be a couple of "exotic game" farms/preserves (for hunting & such) that have Roe deer (amongst other critters) here in the US.

No, Jock, the roe are all yours. The only roe buck we have is Sears, Roebuck & Co.

I'm going to have to do some research on this, but I seem to recall an advertisement in a hunting magazine a couple months ago that mentioned (Scottish) Roe deer. I think it was in Texas, but might've been Oklahoma.

Jock, not as far as I know. And, thanks for pointing that out - I was just copying what the website had written. In the US male whitetail deer are known as "bucks" and females are known as "does" like your roe deer. Oh, and thanks also for the suggestions.

My mistake....it was the (Scottish) Red deer that is offered up for exotic game hunting here (amongst other species).
I confused it for this taxidermy shop that advertised Roe deer in their price listing once (also seen here on their website).

Did you have the antler? If so, Rab Gordon sells blades; and a drill press or steady hand, and a bit of epoxy, would be all you need to make your own.

I made one using an antler crown given me by my brother-in-law and one of Rab's damascus blades.

    Almost finished

    Final form

I can certainly vouch for Drac's work. I received a beautiful Sgian Dubh from Sydnie7 for Christmas that is marvelous. We will be positing pictures soon.
