    winter preparation

I've been thinking about getting ready for the cold and snow soon to come. I'm considering making a pair of gaiters to wear with my kilts, perhaps lined wool given a good treatment with ScotchGuard. This would probably be better than relying on socks for warmth and to stay dry.

Your hiking gaiters should work very well. I don't own any so it's a trip to the fabric store and a little time at the sewing machine .

Are you contemplating something that would go as hig as the socks, or about half high like a pair of spats? What color, matching the sock or the boot? Interesting idea. I've seen some gaiter like "boot tops" in a ren-fair type catalog that can make a regular pair of shoes look like seven league boots. We have a pair of Puttees in our collection of old motorcycle stuff that wrapped around a riders calf and pants to keep them clean and dry and that's what you're seeing in the old pictures that look like the riders are wearing knee-high boots. lots of precedence for something like this.

I'm thinking along the lines of knee high with velcro as the main closure with some straps and buckles for decoration on the outside. The buckles don't need to be functional it can be velcro straps since it's just for a look I like. They'll likely be black to match my boots.

Considering in this area we get about 6 weeks of "winter" and in that only 3-4 days which could compare with the weather 'up north'. I feel kind of left out because I really don't have any preperation to do.

NOT that I am complaining mind you...

Yup, material wrapped around the leg and secured with leather thongs. I'm kicking some ideas around for a pair of gaiters.

I happen to like the WWII style gaiters I've seen in Army surplus catalogues. The ones I saw come to about the same level as kilt-hose. Might look kind of funky with a kilt. I was thinking about getting a pair of those, a monocle, and a cigarette holder. I bet people would really give me plenty of space.
