    wool waistcoats

Today I decided to wear my tweed waistcoat with a kilt I had made a few years ago, then later this afternoon my trad 1770s navy wool waistcoat arrived from Jas Townsend so I put that on instead. I know the socks and shoes are wrong for the 1770s waistcoat but already I am in the process of making moggans and will buy some buckled shoes later on to complete the look. What do you think ?

You are right on trend - there is a waistcoat revival going on.

Both waist coats look neat - the longer length of the navy one is out of proportion with the kilt, though teaming it with darker hose/moggans would probably help with that.

If it doesn't kill the whole look of the new navy waistcoat, shape the bottom more to accommodate the sporran. We see you've got the skill with the kilt. Show us the back (before and after) if you decide to alter the vest. Does it have a "cinch" (adjustable strap) or darted to taper now and/or will it, if modified? I am digging the color and button array as is and it goes well with the current kit in your photo. I believe the next additions of buckles and moggans will be even better. Fine showing Kiwi2

    Hi Everyone

Thanks for your comments, I will be leaving the 1770s waistcoat length as is as that is how they were worn back in the mid 1700s and the bottom of the waist coat also has working flap pockets, the waist coat does not have a strap of buckle on the back to adjust the fit . But I am very happy how Jas Townsend made it as it looks great and fits perfectly. My next purchase is a Jacobite 1745 middle class short coat with fabric covered buttons, I will get that jacket cut a bit shorter than the waistcoat as per the style of that period. Tomorrow on my day off I have a lesson in felt making at a local craft cafe - so I am making a new Jacobite bonnet for the up coming winter . Should be fun as I have never tried making a felt bonnet before !
