    Young laddie seeks Scottish bonnet

Moderators, if I have posted this in the wrong forum, I apologize and ask that this post be moved or redirected to the correct place. If this, or a similar question has been asked before, please just point me in the direction of the post and feel free to lock or delete mine. Much thanks.

Fellow members, I'm again asking for your help. I've got a couple younger brothers who have taken a shine to playing large amounts of Team Fortress 2 and the younger of the two was asking me about one of the hats you can get for the Demoman. (If none of this makes sense, I'll get straight to the point.)

So what I'm asking for is help in locating a source for a cheap, but sturdily made balmoral bonnet suitable for an 11yr old boy, with room for growth. Any help is appreciated.

You can get hand-knit bonnets from the Scottish Tartans Museum, or from me for the same price.

You may be better off getting him a decent but inexpensive beret, and if he really wants a toorie make one from some yarn and tag it on top. Some budget military berets can be had for under $15US online if you look hard enough. I have a couple Kangol Monty Wool berets that I love in the fall and winter. There are cheap Balmorals out there to be had, but they are just that---cheap. To get anything adjustable or decent quality means going up to a Robert Mackie (or a custom from a weaver directly), and the price ends up at $75US or higher. Tams are similar, have a toorie, are cheaper and generally one size fits all as they have a stretchy band opening instead of the more fixed size Balmoral.

I have several Balmorals, tams and berets in a variety of colors, but save the balmorals for highland wear kilted days.

Piperdbh, thank you for the link and information regarding yourself.

ForresterModern, I hadn't actually considered a tam or a beret. I suppose I'm asking for a balmoral because my brother does like to be accurate whenever possible. However, he's not likely to actually get the differences between the styles other than the beret, since he's familiar with that hat already.

Auld Argonian, I can't sew to save my life, but thanks! I have a couple relatives and friends who are more familiar around sewing machines and needles, this might be just the thing.

I have one of these half done right now...using grey polarfleece material (I should have it done just as the weather gets too warm to wear polarfleece...). It's pretty easy, pretty cheap and you can size it to a smaller head or get some material that has a little stretch to it so that it can be used even as the young 'un grows a little.

Well what I have done is bought one from 'kilt mart' (I love that name). I bought it for him at least 3 years ago and it has held up just fine through rain and shine. He is now 12 and still wears it. It looks as good as ones I have bought for much more money but better for my wallet and nerves.

Here is the link if you would like to take a look:

I know you said you didn't have skill at sewing, but here's a recent thread about Glengarries...

Thanks to all for the replies.

I have a sister who is now interested in making a tam or two once she finishes the patchwork blanket she's working on. And the older of the two brothers is looking into buying his own balmoral and possibly a glengarry. All thanks to you fine folks.

Old Hippie, I'll check out the glengarry patterns you've used and point them out to my brother.
