1945 Film Reel of Inverness, the Caledonian Canal, Glenfinnan, Loch Ness

Came across this film clip from 1945, showing a travelogue-like traipse through the Highlands. It shows views of Ben Nevis, the lochs making up parts of the Caledonian Canal and the Canal itself. Shots of Glenfinnan show the Prince Charlie monument, the railway overpass used (much later) in the Harry Potter films and a bicentennial gathering commemorating the Rising in 1745. Culloden also makes an appearance. The bit I found the most interesting was a gentleman wearing a 200 year old Jacobite cockade on his bonnet. Very interesting.

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful document. I was there this Spring and enjoyed Scotland very much. A superb scenery, very friendly people with a 'civilized' behaviour on the roads (drivers in my country could learn a lot!).

Thanks for posting this link. Despite the limitations of film making in 1945, it manages to capture the magnificent grandeur of the mountains, the beauty of the lochs, the peace and quiet of the smaller corners, the sombre atmosphere of Culloden and the people going about their daily business. Quite magical, it could only be Scotland.
    Regards, Sav.
