Brigadoon
Well, my wife loves musicals. Sometimes she gets tired of the action movies and spy thrillers I enjoy and wants to watch something lighthearted and romantic (::wretch: .
Well, since its Burning Man season again, she sat us down to watch Brigadoon with Gene Kelley, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse.
It's about two guys who get lost in the woods while grouse hunting in Scotland. They stumble upon an enchanted city that only exists for one day every hundred years.
Well, being a Burning Man fan, I'm all into enchanted cities that disappear into thin air. Then there were the kilts! Fabulous kilts!
But all that singing and dancing... Oh well, I guess that's why they call it a musical.
I thinking remake. Mel Gibson and Bruce Willis get lost in the woods hunting... uh... each other! And they stumble upon this weird city like Barter Town with all these tough guys in kilts who ride around on tricked-up vehicles. But they're like, evil and their city is cursed and only exists for one weekend, so they have to do all their evil stuff before the city disappears again.
Whew... that was great! I need some popcorn and stiff shot of Laphroaig.

I know just where you can get some actors when you start casting! 8) Just check out the galleries and your job will be done! I see Bubba as Don Kilteone, hard bitten leader of the family. Rhino would be his right hand man. Graham is the friendly missionary trying to keep peace between the tribes. Maybe Bear could be the new boss trying to carve out space for his clan. I think you're on to something here Bill!

My 2 year old daughter is a huge fan of "Singing in the Rain" so we rented Brigadoon for her (yeah, it was for her......that's it). She liked it, but not nearly as much as she likes the other film. I'll tell you though I like the fact that she loves kilts and bagpipes as much as I do.

I enjoyed watching brigadoon.
Several years ago I was able to see the stage musical, and it was certainly one of the best I've ever seen. I'd love to be able to see it again.

This reminds me of the first I seriously thought of getting a Kilt. I was about 20, on a date at a dinner theater that was doing Brigadoon. The guys were dancing on stage and she grabs my arm, leans her… uuuh, chest, onto my shoulder and says into my ear; “You should get one of those.” :-D
Of course, in those days it wasn’t easy to figure out where to get one short of going to Scotland.

About six or seven years ago the original kilts from Brigadoon were on Ebay. I bought the one Gene Kelley wore, with the silver thread added, for $125.00. Later sold it for a lot more to a collector of memorabilia.

Having been involved in a lot of theatre productions, I can tell you that Brigadoon is one of those shows that theatre companies avoid like the plague and that actors make fun of unmercifully. I once heard that it was thrown together by Lerner and Lowe to fufill some kind of contract and that THEY thought it was a dubious achievement at best.
The movie is saved by the presence of Cyd Charisse...phenomenally babe-alicious and legs from here to the corner. She showed up on an Oscar telecast several years back and danced...she must have been in her seventies by this time but she was still amazingly fine. I'm saying all of this and trying to remember - not to be morbid - if she's still with us or if she passed away...there's some website out there that keeps track this and I'll check it after I get through here...
The remake suggestion, however, sounds like a plan.
Best
