Commandos, kippers and clearances
This is the last stretch of Michael Portillo's train journey on the west coast of Scotland from Ayr to Skye. Here he visits the training centre of WW2 commandos, goes fishing for langoustines from Mallaig and meets an American refugee, crofting on Skye - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ascTtjuddFo .

The desperate days of early WW II in isolated Britain bred the Commandos out of that spirit of desperation.
Eternal honour and thanks to those young men of beyond courage, who did many immortal deeds, no one should have to do.

Jock,
I recall ten years ago driving from Callander down to Dumfries. Somewhere before we skirted Glasgow, and quite likely before Stirling, we chanced upon a memorial to David Stirling of SAS fame. I have no digital images, but might you know the locality? From memory, it was a statue of him in open ground, not far from the small carpark. It did not seem to be much visited.
Easter greetings,
Grizzled Ian

Easter greetings,
This is probably what you are looking for - http://www.rampantscotland.com/visit...t_stirling.htm . His son married Diana Rigg - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/...dvantages.html - and she is, or was, Chancellor of Stirling University.

Easter greetings,
There is a statue of Colonel Sir David Stirling not far from Callender, at Doune. I have only been there the once some four or five years ago and it seemed to be quite popular when I was there.
