    Dead Man Saves Three Lives

One hundred years ago, my great-grandfather was one of only three people to survive the sinking of the Mayflower on Lake Kamaniskeg. Four men managed to lash hands together over a coffin the boat was carrying until they washed ashore upon an island. It was at this time that one of the four perished from hypothermia. The remaining three including my ancestor spent a dismal night, wet and frozen from the icy waters in the snowstorm with no fire to warm them until rescue came the next morning. They were the lucky ones. My family was in Barry's Bay this week to commemorate the event which claimed many lives in the community. That's my kilted brother Elliot on the far left with my father, aunt and cousin also in attendance.

The odds of being born are long enought already. The adventures of our ancestors - who survived or we'd never have been born - make us better appreciate the gift of life and the time we have lava surfing on this rock.

As a good friend often says, "I'm not waiting for my ship to come in. My ship came in when I got the gift of life.

Any one of our thousands of ancestors "doesn't make it" and we don't exist....

Great true adventure and certainly worthy of grateful celebration.
